Atlanta narrowed three blocks of Peachtree Street in 2021 and installed a crosswalk. Then after opposition, the city converted the road back - partly: The crosswalk wasn’t removed, just left it to fade. Last month, a man was hit by a car in the crosswalk and killed. www.ajc.com/news/health-...

If your rebuttal is let’s get u an umbrella extension on ur wheelchair what a bright idea. Ur missing the point. Bike lanes are great & I use them but they don’t solve the entirety of our transportation challenges. Will they shield u from the rain or keep you warm during the winter?

Transportation inequity is having to roll 1mi in winter rain at night. It’s coming home soaked & having to roll down the hallway carpet for 10 min til my wheels dry. Equity is building a robust transit network for everyone so disabled ppl are included. But carden least u got some plastic flex posts

Unsupportive family: Elphaba’s father rejected her for her appearance. In order to compartmentalize the feeling of rejection, it created the shield, hyper independence, defensiveness etc. Unfortunately history shows many parents institutionalize their disabled children bc they don’t accept them. End

Independence and isolation: Living in a world where u always feel different can feel isolating. The shield comes with a sense of hyper independence and try to prove to the world we can do it. But at the risk of social isolation and not letting ppl in. Elphaba and Nessa both model this beautifully.

Emotional burden: On that note I’m asked several times a week how long uve been in a chair, can u walk, if I can be “fixed”, asked to be prayed over, what happened to me. We can’t expect to have to explain to the world all the time and sometimes it comes across as defensive as Fiyero calls out

Disability shield: If u live w a permanent disability it’s inevitable that ull have a wall up. The defensive mechanisms we put in place are there bc of the inaccessible world and ignorant ppl we deal w on a daily basis. Elphaba having to explain to everyone why she is the way she is is that shield.

Medical model: Ppl offered to try and fix Elphaba w sorcery but she just wanted to live her life feel seen and valued. Focusing on disability as the problem is setting urself up for failure. Instead focus on ways to make them feel part of society which happened when Morrible took her under her wing

Social anxiety and feeling different: Most days it doesn’t bother me but there are times it’s exhausting being the only physically disabled person in the room of strangers and u see the stares or ppl overly apologizing for being in the way, and having to navigate a world that’s built inaccessibly

Overcompensating your role: Many people tried pushing Nessas chair and I love how every time she and Elphaba resisted saying she doesn’t need to be pushed! Hands off the chair unless ur asked.

Representation: Nessa uses a wheelchair and Elphaba though not disabled u could just as easily correlate the two bc there’s similar overlap in terms of having to explain urself. I love seeing more physical disability portrayed in movies. The actors are also wheelchair users which are so important
