I suppose a lot of the problems with the trope and its name (and variations, like the rivals to lovers you mentioned) is that it also has to fit into the romance framework. Making a *true* enemy into a lover is nearly impossible, so by necessity it gets "toned down" a lot. And often too much.

I'd be happy with the ability to buy like, ten vouchers for a fixed price (so it's only one transaction and cuts down on fees). Then I can log in, click "buy today's issue", and a voucher is used for that. Instead it's still easier to walk to the store and buy the physical paper there. Great.
