Yes. That's clearly part of all this and why I simply will not watch Hasan's execution, or even be present where it is being shown.

2. The tortoise population "exceeds the human population" because THERE ISN'T A HUMAN POPULATION, there's a dozen scientists at a research station. 3. They didn't discover them, they counted* them. I don't know how many pens are in my pen cup, but they're there. *(calculated an estimate of)

Ahhhhhh this is going to bug me, sorry. This is good and cool, good work scientists! Less good work on sci comms: 1. The atoll is 42 islands, not one island. It's ~one tortoise per 10,000 square feet. Lots, but not wall to wall shell. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

The Willy Wonka show with the AI-generated Gene Wilder is bad enough, but the leading story of the local paper's website right now is that the casino has added a Willy Wonka-branded slot machine.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.
X post from AI industry insider Alvin Sng :

My wife: Can you read our baby a book?
Me: I can just play an audiobook from my phone.
My wife: But then it won't be in your voice.
Me: I can train a voice model.

Literally I would ask my parents' friends and co-workers, "do you know any foods that are spicy?" so that I knew what kinds of restaurants to look for when we were out of town. (I got sweet and sour at the Chinese place though: it came with green and red maraschino cherries.)

Bill @caractacus.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
More and more Nepali restaurants are opening here. I know this is just my age, but I didn't even go to a Chinese restaurant until I was like 14 (and in Philly). There were only three spicy things when I was a kid: Tabasco, pickled jalapenos, and shakers of crushed red peppers. Anyway this is great!

Saute some thinly sliced onions in butter, in the pan you'll use for the grilled cheese, while you assemble the sandwiches. One layer of Cooper Sharp, then the onions and three or four slices of pickled Fresno chile, then a layer of sharp cheddar or Cotswold. Medium-low heat until brown and gold.

But that's also true of the impacts of food waste, which is why these efforts are predicated on a simple, apolitical, and not very meaningful statement: it is bad to waste food. It's not that it's a grift (not always, at least), it's just not very ... attentive.
000
Bill @caractacus.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
It's not that it's a lot. It's virtually impossible to know what the environmental consequences of that stuff is, which is why there's so much back and forth about the water use of AI. Talking about avg consumption and impacts is hard enough; figuring out real-world numbers on a small scale, harder.

But what they never get into is how much water is used to clean and scrub those potato peels clean, or how much energy is used to dehydrate other vegetable scraps into a powder or to simmer steak scraps into 3-day stock. Etc etc.
100
Bill @caractacus.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Obviously the problem is the environmental costs of that waste reduction. Composting is a simple solution with few of those costs, but you don't get a profile written about your restaurant with the hook "hey guys, this place composts." You get it from like, turning potato peels into a gratin.

Bill @caractacus.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
"Reducing food waste" is good. If you do a thing that reduces food waste, you've done good. That's the premise of most of these efforts, but it treats "food waste" as a bad thing with unquantifiable consequences. It's bad. Reducing it is good.

There's a new restaurant making pizza dough from the scraps of leftover restaurant bread, and it reminds me of some of the elaborate sustainability efforts we talked about in one of my ethics classes. (I don't think this place is an example of what I'm going to talk about; it just reminded me.)

Lost. I was thinking about this recently and I'd bet that most of the responses are shows that are, if not actually serialized, at least invested in a series-long narrative. No one hates Mad About You or Night Court because of their weird later seasons, but people froth about How I Met Your Mother.
