On this day in 1980, R.E.M. played Tyrone’s in Athens. The concert was preserved on the bootleg "Bodycount at Tyrone’s", the first known bootleg of an R.E.M. show. ‘(Don’t Go Back to) Rockville’, ‘Gardening at Night’ and ‘White Tornado’ were performed live for the first known time.

On this day in 1981, the band resumed the recording of Chronic Town. ‘1,000,000’ and ‘Stumble’ from the session made it onto the EP, joining 'Wolves, Lower' and 'Gardening at Night', which were recorded there six months earlier. ‘Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars)’ was added the following in January.

On this day in 1983, R.E.M., supported by The Community Trolls, performed at Stitchcraft, Inc., an old sewing factory on Oconee Street in Athens, opposite the church. The building was later knocked down and replaced by today’s Waterford apartment complex.

On this day in 1984, R.E.M. played the first of two nights at Duke University. The concert is featured on the bootleg We Are Having a Heavenly Time, an unreleased live album for I.R.S. Fred Mills, of The Bob, asked Peter if something got messed up: “Yeah, the first night really sucked,” he replied.
