#ResidentEvil proves that you can make a nasty horror film and be funny and not be sooooo self-serious. Maybe we can give the horror films that focus on our “shared trauma” a break and just have creepy, gory fun again? This one also nails what it’s like to actually play one of the games. Loved it.

James Gray's Paper Tiger (tonight @ NYFF64): For me, his best--an exceptionally mature, grounded, emotional crime/family drama. Beautiful work w/ actors: Adam Driver is characteristically great, Scarlett Johansson is impeccable in a surprising character role, and Miles Teller does career-best work.

Today I saw the new 4 hour documentary Musk, directed by Alex Gibney. There were too many times to count that a sold out theater burst out laughing at Elon Musk, something he said or did, even sometimes just how he looked. I believe that is his worst nightmare come to life.

When I was younger my Papa had a duplex in Trenton, NJ. Every summer vacation we’d visit him, and every summer we’d take the train into NYC and come up through MSG. I haven’t been back since the towers fell, so my last memory I have of NYC the Towers are still there. (That’s me in the middle in ‘94)

I don’t know where this weird metric has come from that a movie is now successful if it only makes $1 billion or more. In the history of cinema, not counting inflation, only 65 films have hit that mark. 65. Yes, I know budgets have ballooned, but that is an insane ask of the majority of films.
