And you end up with a catch-22 where there currently is no serious framework for justice that's not criminal prosecution, but people still don't like their shit being stolen, so until that framework is created then the only recourse is to either use the police or just do nothing

That's where the discrepancy comes from, because "consequences for thieves" sounds reasonable but the nature of the US justice system means that said consequences can be disproportionate beyond what people think is appropriate, so the end result is people thinking that ALL consequences are bad

in case anyone is curious, there's various public motions in this case that are viewable and it gets *worse* because they were told DURING the meeting that it was in violation of the court's order and they deleted the chat instead lol iapps.courts.state.ny.us/webcivil/FCA...

I believe California contributes to this as well

I suspect that part of this has to be from individualism vs. collectivism, no? Like, less emphasis on having enjoyable public spaces and more emphasis on your own private living space.

This is it, the Quality Train Content™ I’ve always wanted to post. A BNSF freight train passing through Everett, WA with several Boeing greenies on their way from Wichita, Kansas to Renton to become 737s!

amusingly, one of the main reasons why ordinary people form their own LLCs is specifically because then any sort of legal issues that arise are attributed to the company and not them personally (even if they're the only employee)

holy shit did i accidentally cook with this
"THE LONG RECESS: A
CONTINUITY OF GOVERNMENT"

When a decapitating strike leaves the government headless, a retired Chief Justice, James Cromwell, is pulled into a mountain bunker to swear in a line of successors nobody expected to matter. A cynical fixer, Jeff Bridges, stage-manages the ceremony while a acting president, Meryl Streep, discovers the office was designed to be disposable. Hunting the men who orchestrated the strike, a bunkers silent chief engineer, Benicio del Toro, keeps the lights on for a government arguing itself to death underground.

It is funny how a lot of this does come down to optics. Like, Obama did a lot of deportations but because he didn't get on TV and announce it repeatedly as a core part of his platform, Republicans figured he had a lax open border policy and proceeded to go insane over illegal immigration in 2016

okay but as a cashier i am frustrated by people tapping their phones before it's ready because at my store that always causes the card reader to glitch out, or it'll cause the customer's wallet app to freeze and i have to tell them to reset it. and it feels like this happens like 100 times per day.

Also, in BCS the antagonist role for Jimmy is given to Chuck (in a similar "killjoy" vein as Skyler) but they spend a LOOOOOOT more time actually developing Chuck & Jimmy's relationship than they ever did to Walt & Skyler's marriage
000
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
i suspect that misconception is why BCS makes it much, much more clear how we're supposed to feel about Saul (spending a lot of time on his guilt) Whereas Walt's motivations are largely kept under the surface so its easy to just think "wow he did it all for his family" and miss the true meaning

Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
you can tell that even the creators recognized that this was a problem when they did Better Call Saul and pretty much had to scream at the audience "JIMMY BECOMING SAUL GOODMAN IS A BAD THING" compared to Breaking Bad which left everything largely subtextual and up to the audience to figure out

Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

I think the most basic form of it is okay, like just having their devices on the Find My Phone app and checking occasionally, but shit like Life360 (where you're pretty much getting constant updates) is where it becomes super weird.

my kingdom for a world where Hulu was still jointly-owned Disney/Comcast/Fox/Warner, and then Sony and Viacom would buy into it as well, creating one single streaming service for both Live TV and On Demand (and in this timeline Netflix doesn't gaslight the industry into dumping linear TV)

idk, HBO and Netflix feel a bit more...safe, as far as brand integrity goes? like Disney is THE media brand for kids, and faces a lot of criticism for overcommercialization, so Sesame Street becoming associated with Disney might run the risk of diluting Sesame's more "pure" reputation
100
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
also i doubt Sesame Workshop would even *want* to give the distribution rights to Disney, if we're being honest

That said, it's probably a nothingburger considering that VT's at-large Representative seems to be the presumptive candidate usually when there a Senate opening, and Becca Balint seems popular in that regard
000
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Fair enough tho the seat was solidly R before (even when Leahy occupied the other seat) and they have an R governor, so if a moderate, non-crazy R is the opponent, and if the D nominee is someone that progressives aren't particularly crazy about, then we might get a wild race

re: Vermont, I have a sneaking suspicion that once Bernie eventually retires, the fight over his Senate seat is going to be one of the most unhinged races ever

there's a bit in Cars 2 (stay with me here) where they actually have to introduce the concept of a "lemon" to the audience bc even in 2011 when it was made, cars had been largely reliable for most of the children watching, so the idea of a junker that constantly needs repair wasn't as ubiquitous

Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
It turns out that the majority of the people who vote in the Democratic primaries, gasp, are Democrats, who actually like voting for Democrats
0240
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Most of his political positions aren't uncommon with elected Democrats either, like most of the other socialist/leftists in Congress are full-on Dems — Bernie being an Independent seems to be more for street-cred rather than because of him being so radically different from everyone else
000
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
and then there was this idea that Bernie could have still had a chance if only Warren dropped out and endorsed him after the other Dems did so for Biden, and that her staying in was somehow responsible for his campaign ending which at that point wouldn't have made a difference lol
020
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
also the plan in 2020 seemed to rely on the premise that everyone else would stay in the race a lot longer and this would allow him to skirt by at like a 40% plurality lol

I think Gaza in general is unique compared to other US anti-war movements bc usually the main point was a tangible effect on the average American's life. For Vietnam, it was the draft. For Iraq/Afghanistan, it was the cost and length of it. Caring about the people living there was a secondary topic.

feel like the whole story has shades of "University Grads Ain't Shit" considering that Gatsby passes himself off as an Oxford man and despite only attending for a few months, reaps the rewards for it anyway.
000
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
for one thing, 1962/1963 is pretty dang early for the average American to have been against the war (for Lee to have that expectation that Stark would be seen as unlikable) like the escalation had really only just begun but wouldn't become a nationwide crisis of conscience until later in the 60s
050
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
it is interesting how Iron Man's origins seem like they'd be dated because they usually have to do with a specific conflict, but because the US is repeatedly getting itself into wars, it's evergreen in the original comics it was Vietnam, for example

Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
makes me wonder what happens in 20-30 years when the generation that came of age under this era of TV hits peak nostalgia age and there's not gonna be any big properties to milk because nothing stuck around long enough
141
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
So now we have a situation where "prestige TV" has raised the bar so that shows have become like mini-feature films with huge VFX budgets and everything, but paying for all that is difficult because now it's dependent on audiences paying directly for the service
010
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Like, I don't think people realize nowadays that for the majority of the medium's history, TV was mainly funded by a small percentage of the marketing budgets of pharmaceutical/soda & snack food/automotive companies, because it was otherwise free with an antenna until cable hit it big
110
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Part of it is that TV, even sci-fi like Star Trek, used to be comparatively cheaper to produce, and had a more consistent profit due to advertising sales. TNG was expensive, sure, but they had sets that they repeatedly reused, the same 5-6 shots of the Enterprise, limited location shoots, etc
120
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
basically, yeah:
020
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
My ideal new ST series would have just been a live action Lower Decks that was a bit more serious Like it would've been so easy to just have an ensemble cast dealing with episodic adventures, set in the 25th century and doing cameos from the TNG cast in the same lowkey way TNG did with the TOS cast

Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
What's really interesting is that the whole plaza (and the surrounding buildings) is considered a National Historic Landmark, so none of it can be altered, which means this one part of Dallas is architecturally stuck in 1963 while more modern buildings spring up around it
031
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
(the underlying premise could've been interesting, that the New Republic, faced with former Empire members threatening them, is too afraid to wage war directly and instead provides indirect support to the Resistance, but that support is fragile and risks being cut off)
010
Jake @captainjzh.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Like they heard "people don't like all the political scenes in the prequels" and so the New Republic unceremoniously vanishes after TFA (after being barely present at all) because we need to have a scrappy little rebellion going up against the big bad empire again
