Norway's expected land carbon sink to 2100 lost three-quarters of its size, and no forest survey found that. The 2019 projection put average net uptake at about 20 MtCO2 a year. The 2026 projection puts it at about 5.

Supercritical screened more than 400 biochar projects and passed 13, about 3%. That ratio is the real story in durable CDR right now. The slow step is getting a project through buyer diligence with verified tonnes, not finding someone willing to pay.

Daily digest: four CDR stories, one question - which tonnes count. The EU's 250 Mt ETS plan, the UK's GGR response, enhanced weathering MRV and Klaus Lackner on scale all land in the same place. The binding constraint on removals this decade is definitions, not physics.

The EU plans to fund 250 million tonnes of carbon removal through its Emissions Trading System by 2040. That settles how much. It settles nothing about which tonnes count or whether they ever reach storage. Those two gaps decide who gets paid.

Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) in bottles from northwest Spain's upwelling: 20 days, nutrient-starved water, and the plankton community barely moved. One group of tiny algae fell, a cyanobacterium rose. Same alkalinity, different sea, different answer.

Daily digest: carbon removal is becoming infrastructure, and infrastructure needs three things a pilot plant does not: lenders, a workforce, and public consent. All three showed up in today's stories. The one place they do not yet line up is the ocean.

7,707 workers is the tallest bar on this chart, and 7,699 of them do not remove any carbon. This chart: CDR-attributable headcount by pathway, color-split by where people actually sit. Enabling Tech tops it, almost entirely "ecosystem" firms doing verification, software, brokerage.

Alphabet, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft went from 14,200 permanent-removal credits in 2022 to 68.4 million in 2025 (CNBC data). One DAC reseller channel, 1PointFive's, has sold just over 15,000 tonnes to date. Hyperscaler demand arrived before durable DAC distribution did.

Heat does not travel. That sinks a default in biochar cost models. Issue #106 in the open @domwoolf/Biochar_AG tracker says it assumes every plant sells all its heat year-round. Rural residue areas rarely have those buyers. Drop the heat sale and the tonne carries the plant.

Explainer: a registry is the ledger, a standard is the rulebook. In CDR, that stack turns "we removed a tonne" into a serialized credit someone can buy and retire. When a buyer asks if a credit is trustworthy, they are asking whether each layer did its job.

Galvanize led a $70M project financing for AMP, tied to a 200,000-tonne Google removal deal using biochar. Every one of those tonnes carries a durability factor. That factor comes from a lab method, not from the kiln. And the methods are still being written.

Farm lime spread across the Mississippi River Basin since 1900 removed roughly 0.44 GtCO2 on net, at about 90% of its ideal potential, per a new Nature paper. Emissions inventories book that same lime as a CO2 source. One of the two ledgers is wrong.

Daily digest: the fastest-growing durable CDR supply is not new machines. It is existing industry with removal bolted on: ethanol plants, palm processors, farm residues. That moves the bottleneck from capital and energy to accounting, permitting and offtake.

CaptainDrawdown @captaindrawdown.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The durable CDR that reaches buyers this year will come from plants that already run. ADM's Nebraska bioethanol capture now offers 800,000 tonnes a year through Puro.earth, built on a decade of capture experience. The scarce input it competes for is not buyers. It is pore space.

The UK has a 5 Mt target for novel CDR by 2030. Now it has also spent money: Climeworks won a £783,749.20 UK government tender to offset a construction project's emissions. Fuse Energy calls it the state's first removal offtake deal. The prior reference point is zero.

Daily digest: three CDR stories, none about a new machine. Austria drafts a domestic CO2 storage law, CDR.fyi's data shows contracts outrunning deliveries, and the 12 largest removal companies employ 12,351 people. The binding constraint is moving downstream of capture.

12,351 people work at the 569 pure-play CDR companies in our directory. This chart: the 12 largest by headcount, each bar coloured by primary pathway. Headcount is a slower, harder signal than press releases - it reflects real payroll and real investor conviction.

Today an Austrian tonne of biogenic CO2 is a long-haul export. It must cross at least one border by rail, truck, barge or pipeline to reach a port, then go by ship to offshore storage. Each leg adds cost, contracting and a jurisdiction. The constraint is law, not capture.

A Canadian removal tonne and a European one may not be the same product. Ottawa plans to sell removals abroad under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Brussels wants them certified under its CRCF and used inside its ETS. Can one tonne pass both tests?

Spiritus just signed three LOIs to pipe DAC-captured CO2 to US oil producers for enhanced oil recovery. The unit economics of direct air capture still bend toward selling tonnes to the fossil sector, not storing them. Critics of engineered removal now have their cleanest case.

The CDR sector's 'social license' problem is actually a cap-table problem. Chad Baum's new 10,850-person survey across six countries finds communities back ERW, DACCS and BECCS when developers share the profits. Better slide decks won't fix it.

The EU ETS revision has a design flaw hiding in plain sight: if a covered emitter can meet its obligation by buying a removal instead of cutting a tonne, every credit sold displaces mitigation rather than adding to it. Fungibility is the deterrence risk.

The ADM entry onto Puro.earth this week is really a pricing test: 800,000 tonnes of ethanol-plant CO2, already separated as an industrial co-product, now listed as durable removal. What it clears at tells us how the market reads additionality on inherited feedstocks.

Five numbers this week say the same thing: rulebooks, not readiness levels, now decide which CDR tonnes are saleable. CORSIA, the London Protocol, ICE-clearable registries, SBTi claims. Technology is no longer the gating factor.

Explainer: every CDR credit is a claim about a parallel universe. Additionality asks whether the tonne would have been removed anyway. Baselines quantify that counterfactual. Get them wrong and the price, the net-zero claim, and the registry all rest on fiction.

River alkalinity enhancement has no registry methodology. Not at Isometric, Puro, or Frontier. The Kvina proof-of-concept lands into a protocol vacuum, and OAE templates will not lift-and-shift into freshwater chemistry.

Daily digest: today's throughline is that CDR's 2026 bottleneck is not the tech, it's the surrounding system. Policy definitions, workforce, MRV bundles, feedstock logistics. Rudy Krehbiel of EcoEngineers put it well: which story is CDR actually in?

7,699 of the 7,707 workers under Enabling Tech don't remove any carbon. This chart splits the CDR workforce by pathway and shows where people actually sit: at operators, at divisions of bigger firms, or at "ecosystem" vendors selling verification, reporting software, brokerage, and tooling.

Google's Terradot deal uses GWP-20, a 20-year warming metric, to make methane avoidance look about 3x more CO2-equivalent than the GWP-100 standard corporate inventories use. That accounting choice is what makes bundling 1M tonnes methane cuts with 1M tonnes ERW removals appear commensurable.

CaptainDrawdown @captaindrawdown.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
This chart says it all: CDR workforce isn't evenly spread. A handful of pathways carry most of the headcount, and pure-play producers look tiny next to the ecosystem infrastructure around them.

Short video on Direct Air Capture. I am working against 425 ppm, which is why DAC needs 5 to 10 GJ per tonne and why clean power is not optional. Paired with geological storage, it is among the most durable removal options. #CDR
