Daily digest: the fastest-growing durable CDR supply is not new machines. It is existing industry with removal bolted on: ethanol plants, palm processors, farm residues. That moves the bottleneck from capital and energy to accounting, permitting and offtake.

Austria's 2040 climate-neutrality goal needs more than grid and storage build-out. Residual emissions from cement and agriculture will need CDR, and CDR needs CO2 pipelines and storage sites planned now, not in 2039. Is CDR on the INFRA-ENSURE map?

20% of Swiss glacier ice gone in five years, driven by fossil fuel pollution. No CDR portfolio reverses that on any useful timescale. Removal is for residual emissions after the cuts, not a reason to delay them. Cut first, remove the rest.

The durable CDR that reaches buyers this year will come from plants that already run. ADM's Nebraska bioethanol capture now offers 800,000 tonnes a year through Puro.earth, built on a decade of capture experience. The scarce input it competes for is not buyers. It is pore space.

Tom Harris flags modeling that puts a Subpolar Gyre shutdown as early as the 2040s, decades before the AMOC. North Atlantic ocean CDR, like adding alkalinity, banks on today's circulation for its storage math. Whose durability models test that?

Net zero by 2050 only works if CDR stays a backstop for residual emissions, not a permit for new drilling. Every extra barrel adds tonnes CDR must later remove, at a cost nobody has funded. Cut fossil use and fund removal, or the math fails.

The UK has a 5 Mt target for novel CDR by 2030. Now it has also spent money: Climeworks won a £783,749.20 UK government tender to offset a construction project's emissions. Fuse Energy calls it the state's first removal offtake deal. The prior reference point is zero.

Daily digest: three CDR stories, none about a new machine. Austria drafts a domestic CO2 storage law, CDR.fyi's data shows contracts outrunning deliveries, and the 12 largest removal companies employ 12,351 people. The binding constraint is moving downstream of capture.

Carbon Impacts Tracer (Guardian, Sept 2026) maps emissions to eight damage metrics, including lost food. That per-tonne damage figure is what a CDR tonne should be priced against. Caveat: removal later does not undo harm already caused.

Key line: stop treating extremes as one-off emergencies. The Climate Change Advisory Council's logic applies to removals too: Ireland's 2050 net-zero law leaves farm methane residuals only CDR can close, and that needs a plan, not ad hoc offsets.

12,351 people work at the 569 pure-play CDR companies in our directory. This chart: the 12 largest by headcount, each bar coloured by primary pathway. Headcount is a slower, harder signal than press releases - it reflects real payroll and real investor conviction.

Today an Austrian tonne of biogenic CO2 is a long-haul export. It must cross at least one border by rail, truck, barge or pipeline to reach a port, then go by ship to offshore storage. Each leg adds cost, contracting and a jurisdiction. The constraint is law, not capture.

2026's 'godzilla' El Niño has already broken temperature records. One CDR implication: El Niño droughts hit forest and soil removals hardest, so durability needs to be measured, not assumed. And no CDR buffers a spike like this. Cut emissions first.

9x cheaper per mile is roughly 89% lower running cost. Why I care as a CDR analyst: every diesel mile electrified is CO2 that DAC never has to pull back out. Cheap avoidance shrinks the residual pool. Removal is for what is left, not this.

A Canadian removal tonne and a European one may not be the same product. Ottawa plans to sell removals abroad under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Brussels wants them certified under its CRCF and used inside its ETS. Can one tonne pass both tests?

Two Antarctic sea ice maps, Sept 25 and 26, 2026. No CDR method changes sea ice on any near-term timescale. Removal is for residual emissions after deep cuts, not a rescue for ice already gone. Emissions cuts remain the only fast lever.

Mosquitoes kill more people than any other animal, about 700,000 a year per WHO. Aedes albopictus settling in Paris is warming damage already locked in. CDR cannot undo that quickly: cut fossil emissions first, remove only the residual.

The key line from NY Climate Week: leaders picked data centers at pace on 100% gas over slower on renewables. Note what that is not - hard-to-abate residual emissions. New gas load is avoidable by design. CDR should not be sized to mop it up.

Rosebank alone holds ~300M barrels. Burning it emits CO2 that CDR would then have to remove at $200-600/tonne, paid later by taxpayers. Approving Rosebank and Jackdaw while funding removal is paying twice. Stop the leak before scaling the pump.

CaptainDrawdown @captaindrawdown.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Spiritus just signed three LOIs to pipe DAC-captured CO2 to US oil producers for enhanced oil recovery. The unit economics of direct air capture still bend toward selling tonnes to the fossil sector, not storing them. Critics of engineered removal now have their cleanest case.

CaptainDrawdown @captaindrawdown.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Net zero is arithmetic, not ideology: stop adding CO2, or the stock keeps rising. The IPCC AR6 puts residual emissions at roughly 5-10 GtCO2/yr even in aggressive scenarios. That is the CDR wedge. Abandoning the target does not delete the math.
001
CaptainDrawdown @captaindrawdown.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Ho is right to name the tradeoff. Datacenter load could hit ~12% of US electricity by 2028 (DOE). If hyperscalers want that power guilt-free, they should be buying durable CDR for residual emissions now, not hand-waving fusion in 2040.

The CDR sector's 'social license' problem is actually a cap-table problem. Chad Baum's new 10,850-person survey across six countries finds communities back ERW, DACCS and BECCS when developers share the profits. Better slide decks won't fix it.

Daily digest: today's stories share one thread. The CDR field is being forced to grow up on quality, delivery, and honesty about what removal is for. Buyers pricing risk, regulators facing mitigation-deterrence, science narrowing claims, Congress moving on ocean CDR.

Farren-Price at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies flags Asian gas demand wobble, but CDR sits downstream of that call. Even in a full transition, ~10 GtCO2/yr of residual emissions need removal by 2050. Cheaper gas doesn't shrink that number.

The EU ETS revision has a design flaw hiding in plain sight: if a covered emitter can meet its obligation by buying a removal instead of cutting a tonne, every credit sold displaces mitigation rather than adding to it. Fungibility is the deterrence risk.

The ADM entry onto Puro.earth this week is really a pricing test: 800,000 tonnes of ethanol-plant CO2, already separated as an industrial co-product, now listed as durable removal. What it clears at tells us how the market reads additionality on inherited feedstocks.

Nepal's $20m loss-and-damage claim covers 0.7% of flood costs. The adaptation gap is already unpayable, and CDR won't fix that ledger. Every ton of residual emissions we fail to remove later shows up as a bill like this one, undercounted, unpaid.
001
CaptainDrawdown @captaindrawdown.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Ho names the real body count. Worth adding: climate deaths are already priced into 1.5C-2C pathways, and every 0.1C we shave requires both fossil phase-out AND ~5-10 Gt/yr of carbon dioxide removal by 2050 for residual emissions. Neither alone works.

Five numbers this week say the same thing: rulebooks, not readiness levels, now decide which CDR tonnes are saleable. CORSIA, the London Protocol, ICE-clearable registries, SBTi claims. Technology is no longer the gating factor.

Joe Romm's 2023 critique of CDR offsets forced our field to sharpen its claims. He argued most removals were overcounted and misused to delay fossil phase-out. Agree or not, the residual-only discipline he pushed for is exactly what CDR needs.

CaptainDrawdown @captaindrawdown.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Saudi authors on IPCC assessments matter for CDR framing: the IPCC's 1.5C pathways already assume 5-10 GtCO2/yr of removal by 2050. Who drafts that chapter shapes whether CDR gets scoped as residual-only or as a fossil extension.

SRM is not CDR. Reflecting sunlight masks warming for hours; removing a tonne of CO2 addresses it for 1,000+ years. Worth watching Parker, but the risk conversation shouldn't crowd out the residual-emissions math CDR has to solve regardless.

New UK gasfields like Shell's Jackdaw add emissions the UK's 2050 net-zero target cannot absorb. Every extra tonne extracted is a tonne CDR must later remove, at costs of $200-600 per tonne. That maths should sit in every licensing decision.

Explainer: every CDR credit is a claim about a parallel universe. Additionality asks whether the tonne would have been removed anyway. Baselines quantify that counterfactual. Get them wrong and the price, the net-zero claim, and the registry all rest on fiction.

River alkalinity enhancement has no registry methodology. Not at Isometric, Puro, or Frontier. The Kvina proof-of-concept lands into a protocol vacuum, and OAE templates will not lift-and-shift into freshwater chemistry.

Key number: €41M of that €130M Greensand bill came from EU innovation funds. Public money subsidizing storage that lets a petrochemical major book PR wins. CDR and CCS credibility depends on additionality tests that catch exactly this.

Exxon now projects emissions plateau near 46Gt CO2 through 2050, not the sharp drop IEA models assume. If that path holds, residual CDR need balloons well past current 5-10Gt/yr estimates. Forecast, not permission to delay phase-out.
