Matt @capt-kafei.bsky.social · 17/12/2024This is getting long, but as a final note, I want to say that not all programmers are libertarian grifters! The ones that are, are more likely to be shouting about how great the latest grift is on social media. Many others are just working away, rolling their eyes when their bosses rant about AI. 000
Matt @capt-kafei.bsky.social · 17/12/2024The only thing that'll result in is burned-out, jaded programmers and shitty, unreliable, unextendable software. Meanwhile, the suits lay people off and give themselves bonuses while boasting about all the costs they were able to cut, and blame any delays on the programmers. 100
Matt @capt-kafei.bsky.social · 17/12/2024But that's the future programmers can look forward to if the suits decide to "cut costs" by AI generating an initial draft of a codebase, and then having humans clean that up to production quality. No creative freedom, no opportunity to create designs - just polishing a turd under constant stress. 100
Matt @capt-kafei.bsky.social · 17/12/2024Many non-programmers don't get this, but there's joy in getting to understand a problem, designing a solution yourself, and exercising your creative freedom in creating an elegant, maintainable, and functional implementation. There is no joy in cleaning up someone else's trash. 100
Matt @capt-kafei.bsky.social · 17/12/2024For example, the original devs didn't care about boot time at all, but the PCIe spec says your chip needs to be able to respond within 100ms of power on. Reducing boot time from 500ms to <100ms is not something you can fix with a few lines of code. It requires significant thought and rework. 100
