Quote reads: “Understanding who receives gang enhancements, and for what offenses, helps policymakers better understand the scope of gang-related law enforcement in California.

Gang enhancements can add years or even decades to a prison sentence, so understanding how and where they're applied matters enormously — both for the individuals affected and for California's broader approach to public safety." - Dr. Johanna Lacoe, Research Director at the California Policy Lab’s UC Berkeley site.

Importantly, the tracker cannot determine whether AI directly caused any specific layoff. Instead, it helps identify where labor market changes may be emerging and where additional attention may be needed to support affected workers. (10/12)

The California Policy Lab @capolicylab.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
Some industry patterns stand out as well. Claims have been particularly elevated in technology-related sectors. While trends in the Information sector have recently returned closer to pre-generative AI levels, claims in Professional Services have remained elevated. (9/12 )
This line chart shows high-AI-exposure UI claims in the Information and Professional Services industries versus all other California industries, indexed to November 2022 = 100. Both tech sectors spiked above 150 in 2023; Professional Services remained elevated through May 2026, while Information returned closer to baseline.
100
The California Policy Lab @capolicylab.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
The data also shows regional differences. In the San Francisco Bay Area, unemployment claims among workers in highly AI-exposed occupations have remained consistently higher than before generative AI tools became widely available. (8/12 )
This line chart compares high-observed-AI-exposure UI claims in the San Francisco Bay Area to the rest of California, indexed to November 2022 = 100. Bay Area claims jumped over 50% after the ChatGPT 3.5 release and stayed elevated through May 2026, while the rest of California rose only modestly.

The California Policy Lab @capolicylab.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
Since mid-2023, unemployment claims among master’s and PhD holders in highly AI-exposed occupations have remained elevated compared with pre-generative AI levels. (7/12)
100
The California Policy Lab @capolicylab.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
At the same time, the data points to several trends worth monitoring. We found elevated numbers of unemployment insurance claims among some highly AI-exposed workers, particularly workers with advanced degrees. (6/12)
This line chart shows initial UI claims among high-AI-exposure workers by education group, indexed so November 2022 = 100. Claims among Master's/PhD and Bachelor's holders rose sharply after ChatGPT 3.5's release - peaking above 150 in July 2023 (a 50%+ increase) - and remained elevated through May 2026, while claims among less-educated workers were largely flat.
100
The California Policy Lab @capolicylab.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
So what does the first analysis show? Comparing data before and after the release of ChatGPT-3.5 in 2022, there is no evidence of a statewide surge in layoffs among workers in highly AI-exposed occupations. (5/12 )
This line chart shows the number of initial UI claims in California each month from January 2019 through May 2026, separately for low, mid, and high potential-AI-exposure occupations. The three lines move roughly in parallel before and after the November 2022 release of ChatGPT 3.5, with no clear divergence - meaning statewide UI claims show no aggregate surge tied to AI.
