Only something isn't quite right about The Amazing Digital Circus. Player input is too frequently ignored. The AI running the system keeps breaking down and being overwritten. Glitches and corrupted code seem to follow her even without the headset on.

Underneath the shiny veneer of each adventure lies a secret so damning, it could cost the six testers their sanity. Just what the hell are they all really testing here?

Chapter 8: Pretty Prism Power, Release!

Attending the costume-making class by herself already felt like a mistake. While the rest of the class partnered up with friends they brought along, Diane fidgeted alone in her seat, eyes trained on the needle of the sewing machine in front of her.

Beta-testing The Amazing Digital Circus was going so well that her therapist suggested she try yet another item on the non-Diane activity list. Technically, this was still well within her interests, but she had always found sewing and embroidery to be a more solitary activity. It would push her just a little further outside her comfort zone to share more of herself with others.

Or so her therapist hoped. As it turned out, this class was a little more involved than Diane expected.

Everyone around her cheered when their teacher arrived in full costume and make-up. Apparently, she was Internet-famous and made a good living dressing up as cartoon and video game characters and providing plenty of free costume design tutorials online. Many of her students were already eager followers of her work.

Diane guessed she was some kind of technicolor witch. The blue-and-pink swirled cornucopia of a hat had a visor clipped over her pointy blonde wig. Her pale shoulders were exposed as the rest of her pastel costume hugged her slim figure. She even had a massive wand with a swirled decoration on top.

If it was any other online game, then that would put an end to it. But her new friends all exchanged wary glances until Christine replied, “The game is…kind of exclusive. Sorry. If it were up to me, I would invite you, but—”

“It’s still in development,” Priya cut in. “We were invited to test the beta version.”

It was like a bolt of lightning to her senses. Diane clasped her hands together to stop them from trembling. “Is this game meant to help kids, by any chance? Like is it…therapeutic?”

Again the others all exchanged looks she couldn’t quite decipher. Priya narrowed their eyes. “Wait…”

She pushed her luck one final time. “Are all of you…beta testers for the circus, too?”

Silence hung low in the air like the first crack of thunder before a storm hit. The only sound in the room came from a wooden analog clock ticking by the kitchen.

Priya snorted and the others finally started to laugh, too. Diane fidgeted where she stood, that familiar shame creeping up behind her. They were laughing at her, right? She had been so far off that it was ridiculous. She was ridiculous for even thinking—

Christine stepped forward, trying to clamp down her laughter. “You know, Ragatha,” she said, “you look exactly how I thought you would in real life.”

A lump formed in Diane’s throat. Despite her reservations over the NDA, she found herself wishing more and more that she could truly connect with the others in the circus. She wanted deep down to be friends with all of them. Even Jax. And here she was hanging out with most of them on the weekends without even knowing.

Emily hunched a little as she smiled, the long sleeves draped over her hands similar to drooping ribbons. Priya had plenty of interchangeable accessories and jewelry pieces they tended to swap out at random every time they met up.

Chapter 7: Family Matters

“So what should I draw?” Priya asked as they turned to a fresh page in Emily’s sketchbook. The Friday morning coffee rush had come and gone, so all that was left was waiting for lunch.

Emily smiled as she brought the rest of her art supplies to the pick-up counter. “Can you draw some flowers?”

“Sure. A lot of flowers look kind of the same to me, though.”

Emily hid a laugh behind her long-sleeved hand. “Can you draw lilies? They’re my favorite.”

“Lilies, huh? How come?” they asked as they started sketching. Their dark hair was tied in a lazy ponytail that cascaded over their shoulder.

Emily flushed and coiled some of her own hair around a pale finger. “Um, promise not to laugh?”

“Depends.”

“Pri!” she whined.

Priya laughed, accidentally making one of the petals a little too squiggly. They erased it and said, “Okay, okay, promise.”

The strange man nodded then sat with his hands folded in his lap without another word. They emerged into broad daylight soon after and the man blinked, looking around in cloudy wonder as though he forgot where he was again.

The man looked over at him and suddenly shrieked. Max jumped in his seat.

The man put a hand to his chest. “Oh, sorry, you startled me. Um, where are we going?”

Max snorted despite himself. This nutcase almost reminded him of Kinger. “To outer space,” he replied. “Aliens are taking over Earth, so we’re being evacuated.”

While it might be dangerous to egg on a crazy person, Max couldn’t deny that it was also really, really funny. Besides, the old man seemed harmless enough.

The man scratched his head. “Is that so? Well, I’d like to get my wife before that happens.”

“Yeah? How do you know she hasn’t been abducted yet?”

“Well, there’s no harm in checking. I wouldn’t just leave without her.”

Max narrowed his eyes. Was this guy just fucking with him? Or did he realize this was all a bit and decided to play along?

“So…do you go to school here?” the man repeated.

The bus pulled into the stop just past the hospital and Max tried not to breathe a sigh of relief. He launched to his feet and said, “Nope. Can you let me through?”

As soon as the weird old man stood up, Max tromped down the aisle out into the late afternoon sun. He kept his eyes trained on the ground, hands crammed deep in his hoodie pockets, shoulders bunched like a winch coiled the muscles too tight. The soles of his sneakers dragged along the concrete like a prison sentence.

So…that finale, huh? Spoilers for the TADC finale in this note. You can just skip to the chapter until you’ve seen it.

I do want to address a couple things going forward with this fic. First, I didn’t expect Gooseworx to share their real names/faces at all. That doesn't mean I’m going to retroactively change anything about the human aspects of the characters in this fic. I started planning out this AU right after Episode Six. I want to write about their canon human selves in the future, but for this fic (and any future fics tied to it), I’ll stick to the initial names/designs my sister and I made.

Second, I want to address Jax and her transfem identity. I use she/her to refer to canon!Jax. Initially, I was only going to hint at Jax being transfem in this fic because Zooble and their body/gender dysphoria made that seem a bit redundant, but it turns out it was a much larger aspect of her character than I thought it would be. Though it doesn't change what I have planned in the fic overall concerning this AU!Jax’s character arc, I will make it far more blatant and tie more into the story.

I will still be using he/him and Jax will still be in heavy denial for a good portion of the fic. He might not be comfortable using she/her until closer to the end of the fic (and only in private), and like Lee in canon, he might still be boymodding even if he comes out to the group overall. This is just one aspect of his character, of course, but it is an important one I don’t want to overlook.

Anyway, new chapter, weeeee. This one is heavily Ragatha-focused. Enjoy them all being goofy goobers while it lasts :)
