Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights.

As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data.

Back in the day, a long time ago, when I was in high school, my English literature teacher gave all us 14-15 y.o. a reading list of books we needed to read. I kept mine for over 20 years, and have read almost all of them. Still own many of those books from when I bought them, back in 1968 [!]

Not sure that’s altogether fair on 20-somethings. When I was in my early 20’s I’d heard of (and campaigned against) Greenham Common; Alconbury; Croughton; Bentwaters; Molesworth; and the two B-1 bomber wings at Lakenheath & Mildenhall. They’re all a cancer on our countryside.

Not so. I’m a Brit and live near enough to two American bases: Mildenhall and Lakenheath, both in East Anglia. And we want them fucking gone. In fact, Brits have known where all US bases are in the UK since the 1950’s and the CND no-nukes campaigns ( since they’re all located on former RAF bases).

After volunteering in December 1939, my dad came home just once — in late May 1944. He had a 48 hour pass and was then back preparing for the day to come. His advance unit went on to liberate Bergen-Belsen in ‘45.
