Like many white western feminists, Gloria Steinem was an important part of my journey and for that I will always be grateful.

Some people are so universally beloved that I think we shouldn’t be told when they die. Let us figure it out eventually but never receive confirmation. We should always be able to idly speculate that somehow there’s a chance they *could* still be alive

This has been one of the most exhausting and frustrating weeks of my life in academia and I’m white. I can only imagine how hard it’s been for Black colleagues.

Unfortunately, not of interest to the major media outlets. They are not really interested in the facts, only sensationalist headlines. The real story here is this of course and how white supremacy and white nationalism, has spread and has taken hold of all major western institutions.

Just reflecting on how, a few years ago, a white man* was awarded his PhD in the sociology of education from Cambridge despite significant evidence he had plagiarised a white working-class woman. He now has a glittering career in another country. Not a single newspaper covered it.

As a straight woman in her 40s I have been in my fair share of toxic relationships in my time, but none are as toxic as my relationship with academia. I should quit I should quit, but also think what it *could* be.

As yet another higher education institution rolls out a notice of job cuts, we surely have to ask the government when will they intervene? How decimated does this formerly world leading sector need to get before they say enough is enough?

The North has become 'one big border', a six county buffer zone between Britain and the EU. What is going on here in terms of racist policing and extraordinary levels of immigration and border enforcement is repression and state violence which is elevating violent loyalist neo-nazis.

I work really hard in my role because I believe in the importance of the work and yet time and time again senior management make ill-informed choices that make the work pointless. Life in British higher education is just one very long lesson in the futility of labour in late-stage capitalism.

Heartbreaking news coming from #girlguiding today as they seek to employ an entirely unworkable definition of what constitutes a 'girl'. Ironic really that it is positioned as an 'equality and diversity' statement given that they are seeking to diminish both. www.girlguiding.org.uk/information-...

The new Aussie critique of the Cass Review does not pull its punches about its failures, & makes the point that "gender-critical beliefs" should be declared. Since transphobes have made so much of having these protected by law, they should be required to declare them. archive.is/AqUGz#select...
Evidence‐based medicine has three pillars: (i) appraisal of research evidence, (ii) real‐world clinical expertise, and (iii) individual patient values and preferences. The Review's failures across all three are evident.
Clinician and researcher self‐awareness of personal values is essential for evidence‐based medicine practice. Non‐financial conflicts of interest should be disclosed; for example, religious, cultural, and so‐called “gender‐critical” beliefs. The Review acknowledges no such considerations, and does not disclose the positionality of authors.

Let's be clear. The proposal to deport hundreds of thousands of people born in Britain to parents legally resident in Britain, just because they are black or brown, is not 'right populism'. It's the cornerstone policy of the 1970s National Front.

My dear pal Jo Beckett-King has just published her first YA/children’s (8-12) novel called The House of Found Objects. It’s a mystery with two smart girls and has lots of puzzles - order in to your local libraries! (Jo is refreshingly offline and would loathe to blow her own trumpet so allow me!)
A book being held up by Tori. The cover shows two girls outside a shop. The title is “the house of found objects” and the author is Jo Beckett-king.
