Time for an update on #FallColors in south central #Indiana: it's finally arriving. Last week's leaf peepers got almost nothing for their efforts but this week's should be much happier. Colors look nice in light fog. #photography #woods #trees #color #fog
Green leaves make a frame for woods that are a mix of green, yellow, orange, and red.The view from the end of my drive down my road is a mix of green, yellow, light orange, and bright orange with all the colors seen through a light fog.

Oh Andi, lol. The look on Sniff’s face and then Hopeful’s tail and Giddy’s tongue communicate so much, lol. A definitely study in contrasts with Flit‘s photo. 😄

He’s so tiny. That’s hard to remember too! ❤️
Two photos together. Photo on the left is a man (in red and black) and a fawn-coloured dog (in orange safety vest, looking back towards camera) walking in a snowy woods as the snow is falling. Bare tree trunks in the background, white snow on the ground. Photo on the right is a dog (in red floatation jacket) sitting on a paddle board on a lake looking back to camera. The water is still with sun shining through trees on far bank onto the water. Sky is lighter blue with wisps of cloud.

I usually think of the dittany plant as my winter gift-giver because it creates frost flowers but its summer flower is also a gift for me and for bees.
A bee hangs onto the bottom of a purple dittany flower. The plant's flowers are small, in tufts arising from leaf axils.A bee tops a dittany flower.

There are many things about August I do not love but one thing I will often get as a solace for the heat, humidity, and biting bugs is right-place-right-time delightful light. #photography #light #woods #hiking
Streaks of light shine through trees on a low ridge onto the forest floor, light up ferns and a moss-covered log. Seen from the hiking trail at https://sycamorelandtrust.org/preserves/the-laura-hare-nature-preserve-at-downey-hill/At the same preserve, wagon-wheel spokes of light shine behind at tree on a ridge in a dense woods.

Not something I see every day or any day ever in point of fact. If you want an explanation, you can find it in ALT. #photography #birds #snakes #critters #nature_maybe_red_in_tooth_and_claw
Friday afternoon I heard Flit start barking at something which rapidly became what we call the 'snake bark'. All our dogs bark at snakes the same way: intense and tense barking while they approach, followed by silence while they back away and then repeat the two-step dance. I went outside to see where she and the snake were. She was just up the driveway at its edge. When I got up to her, I saw the snake but it wasn't what she was barking at.

And then I panicked because the hawk looked all wrong to me (the snake, OTOH, looked fine except that the hawk had a good grip on it). Fortunately we have a raptor rescue center in Brown County so I took this photo and called them. The person said the hawk was mantling (where they protect their prey by spreading their wings over it) and I told her that this didn't look right since the hawk was flat on the ground and twisted in a awkward way. She told me to leave the hawk alone for an hour or two but to send her the photo. If it didn't leave they would come get it.

Forty minutes later she called back and asked me to go see if it was still there. When I was about 30 feet away, the hawk flew off. The snake was gone too; no way to know if the hawk still had it, had eaten it, or it got away. The raptor people told me it was a juvenile red-tailed hawk about 10 weeks old (based on their breeding patterns) and typically juveniles wouldn't start hunting until they were about 6 weeks older than this one (so they were impressed). It probably misjudged its strike and that's how it ended up on the ground so awkwardly (so it might not have been even trying to mantle or it could've been trying very clumsily). Flit must've seen the hawk land and that's what set her off originally; she probably thought it was one her mortal enemies (vultures and crows) and intended to chase it off.

They look like they’d be more prone to tipping over, if they got themselves in a precarious position.

I like the angle on this one — gives a good view of how ‘tall’ they are versus the flat/pancake-y ones we see around here. 😄 (That was an odd sentence to type, but hopefully understandable.)

I rarely see the majestic Luna moth in our woods and so I was thrilled to its caterpillar crawling along a trail. Here's hoping it makes to pupa and on to adult. #photography #moths #caterpillars

This was Toddler Turtle Trio month. These 3 (2 1/4"; 2 3/8", 3 1/8") are the smallest Eastern Box Turtles I have ever seen. Eastern Box Turtles are a species of special concern in #Indiana so it's hope-making to see three young ones in such a short time. #photography #turtles #woods #Stunday
A triptych with 3 small Eastern Box Turtles, the first two are shown with my boot for size reference, the third alongside a stick (which wasn't much good for a reference but I took the stick home with me to measure). All three turtles were on trails in our woods.
