This is based on the last IPCC report (projections from models), It doesn't take into account that the Arctic may be warming faster due to the fact that we have cleaned up the aerosols in the air. A recent study suggested the first ice free *day* may be as early as 2027, an ice free month by 2030.

💧 How can we plan for future droughts when past observations are limited? UKCEH hydroclimatologist @wilsonchan.bsky.social explains how ‘hindcasts’ and the UNSEEN method can help us explore rare but plausible scenarios, filling gaps in observations. New blog post: www.ceh.ac.uk/news-and-med... 🧪
Low water levels at Pontsticill reservoir, south Wales, in July 2025.Graph showing unprecedented low summer rainfall found in one example realisation of the ECMWF hindcast archive (in red) compared to observed summer rainfall (in black). The light grey shading indicates the highest and lowest rainfall in the observations over this period. 👩‍💻 What is a Large Ensemble? 👨‍💻 To answer some questions about climate change in the North Atlantic, we’ll use the CANARI Large Ensemble which is a set of climate model simulations. It will help us better understand extreme events and distinguish between forced climate change and natural variability.

❄️ Arctic Warming & Sea Ice Loss ❄️ One of the biggest threats to the UK's climate is the rapid warming of the Arctic and the loss of sea ice. The Arctic is warming at twice the rate of the global average, which could lead to significant changes in UK weather patterns. #ArcticWarming #ClimateChange

🌍 UK Weather & Climate 🌍 The weather and climate of the UK are shaped by the large-scale circulation of the atmosphere and ocean in the North Atlantic. Many factors influence these patterns, but rapid or disruptive changes are a major concern. #ClimateScience
