Well, it happened: Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans to open up Canada’s four largest airports to private investment. So....privatization. That's not the only thing he pledged to a room of obnoxiously rich people. I talked to economists and a top labour leader to break this down:

Very cool that Shopify’s CEO thinks the poor should have far less of a vote than the rich. Still worth that ad read money, folks?
Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke says “good system.” In response to the following proposal:

“Interesting... what about weighted voting proportional to the level of income tax you pay? (no income tax paid - O vote, $1-100k - 1 vote, $100-200k 2 votes and so on... cap it at 5 votes for $500k+. For those that constantly complain about the wealthy not paying tax/fair share they'd have nothing to worry about right? Why not reward representation of taxation and build a democracy around those that foot the bill?”

Looks like Scott Gilmore found a way to create the new Conservative Party he was hoping to see in 2017: just take over the Liberal Party and make it into a Progressive Conservative one. Gilmore (no relation!!!) is set to become Carney's principal secretary.
Globe and Mail headline reads: Carney promotes key advisers Scott Gilmore, Maia Johnson in PMO shuffle

The beginning of the article reads: "Two other members of Prime Minister Mark Carney's inner circle are getting a boost as part of a staff shuffle prompted by the appointment of his principal secretary to the Senate and a deputy chief of staff departing to run for office."Excerpt of a National Observer article from 2017 reads:

"Scott Gilmore - an unapologetic "self-loathing" Conservative - has had it with his political party.
If the Tory leadership race is any indication, he writes in his latest column for Maclean's magazine, the Conservatives appear to be dominated by "xenophobic, economically illiterate, populist buffoons." It's time to build a new right-of-centre party, says the former Canadian diplomat, one that values "liberty, equality and facts over ideology."

Intrigued?"

This could be the start of Carney stacking the senate with people who will vote in favour of his pro-corporate reforms. The senate is one of the few places where his legislation is still slightly scrutinized. Given Carney’s other actions, it would make sense he’d want to remove that “barrier.”
From the prime minister’s website:

“Prime Minister Carney modernises Senate appointment process to respond to Canada's emerging challenges
July 7, 2026
Ottawa, Ontario
The world is changing rapidly. In response, Canada's new government is acting with urgency and ambition to build a stronger, more independent, more resilient country.
That requires strong, effective, and focused representatives who can ensure Canada's institutions are equipped to respond to the challenges of the country they serve.”
