Agricultural exceptionalism on display. Animal farming / slaughter gets a free pass from so many laws - workplace health and safety rules, animal cruelty laws, environmental protections. Everything, really. This powerful industry exempts itself and regulators are just along for the ride.

Quebec dairy farmers are running misleading ads that suggest cows get to live in pastures. In reality, over 70% of Quebec dairy cows spend their lives chained by the neck inside stalls in barns. I'm glad Le Soleil covered this troubling ad campaign. www.lesoleil.com/actualites/a...

For more, read this solid piece by @arshy.bsky.social on what happened when Australia privatized airports in the 1990s. To the surprise of no one, air travellers got screwed and the politician responsible even came to regret it! substack.com/inbox/post/2...

Actually, privatizing Canada’s airports is a bad thing
By opening up our airports to for-profit investment, Carney is ensuring that fares will go up and service will go down

Camille Labchuk @camillelabchuk.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Privatizing airports will make air travel more expensive. This is VERY basic math. Companies aim to extract profit for shareholders and will force us to pay more. In a country where airlines already engage in monopolistic gouging, the last thing we need is privatized airports.

Anyone working in political advocacy would agree. For the first time, the Senate became a useful chamber where important legislation could be introduced, seriously debated, and ultimately pass into law. Updates to Canada's 100-year old animal welfare laws wouldn't have happened without senators.

There's been horrible animal suffering on every single farm I've investigated. It's standard within the industry. While farmers always like to advance the "one bad apple" theory, it's simply bogus. Also, disease on farms is nearly always caused by the actions of farmers, according to CFIA data.

I'm on Canadaland this week, talking about what the government & farms are trying to hide by outlawing undercover investigations at animal farms. (Spoiler: They're trying to stop the videos of sick, sad, and caged animals—regularly kicked and beaten by farmers.)

Or they could have just let this beautiful fish live. Ice fishing has always struck me as so cruel. The fishes don’t even get one season where they aren’t being terrorized by trophy hunting (which is what this is).

Fishing is the largest massacre of wildlife anywhere on our planet, and fishing gear is the largest contributor to plastic pollution in the oceans. Meanwhile fish farms are horribly cruel and polluting. No one should be eating more fishes.

It is such a puzzle that many politicians are so slow to take up better legal protections for animals. Polls consistently show that the public demands better than unregulated factory farms, shoddy roadside zoos, and brutal experiments on animals!
