One man is responsible for getting 100s of books (including mine!) banned in Clay County, FL. One sad dude! Sitting there filling out form after form with false claims about books he hasn't even read! The loudest voices have an outsize impact. We need to be loud--and persistent--too. 5calls.org

This. Interrupting and/or cutting treatment funding for multi-drug resistant #TB 🧪 HIV, malaria, is not efficient. It will cause a completely avoidable global mass casualty event and set back decades of progress.

A year ago I started writing what I thought was a dystopian book about a group of kids at a fascist government boarding school. Their top scientist parents disappear under mysterious circumstances when a new untreatable strain of tuberculosis starts to spread. It feels like non-fiction now.🫠 #TB

Informative update about the Federal funding freeze from a thoughtful and effective politician: NC's new Attorney General, Jeff Jackson
Federal Funding Freeze

One time, many years ago, President Nixon announced that he wasn’t going to spend the money Congress had appropriated for some clean water programs.

And the Supreme Court unanimously said he couldn’t do that. If Congress passes a law that says, “Spend $100 on this,” the president can’t decide, “I’d rather spend $50.” The Constitution gives spending power to Congress - there’s no getting around that simply by declining to spend what they’ve appropriated.

Clinton tried something similar, though on a smaller scale, and the Supreme Court blocked him, too. He used a line-item veto - which Congress had explicitly given him! - to strike certain spending provisions from the budget. The Court ruled that violated the Constitution. Why? Because not even Congress can delegate its power to the president without amending the Constitution. Congress has certain power reserved to it, whether it likes it or not.

So when a president says, “Hey, freeze hundreds of billions that Congress appropriated,” it’s not a close constitutional call. It goes much further than Nixon and Clinton went, and it’s obviously not going to hold up in court.

And it didn’t.On Sunday night, just as I was sitting down to dinner with my family, I got a text about the president’s order to freeze a massive chunk of federal funding. I read the order - just a page and a half long - and it was immediately clear that it was unlawful.

First thing the next morning, I spoke with my team and we all agreed: Based on clear precedent, this violated the Constitution. So we joined the lawsuit to challenge it, and the court quickly put the freeze on hold, pending a full hearing.

Now the order has been withdrawn entirely. The administration said it “didn’t go through the proper approval process.”

Now we’re waiting to see if funding freeze version 2.0 appears. If it does, I assume they’ll take a more tailored approach in the hope of surviving a court challenge.

Here’s what I take from all of this: The rule of law still holds. When power is overstepped, there are mechanisms to pull it back. And it’s important to hold the line, not for politics, but to defend the constitutional order on which civil society depends.

A lot of historically grounded wisdom in this piece, including from former KS State Health Secretary on protecting the public’s health, “More information is better than no information.” Stark contrast to countless health info sites being shut down to restrict information & consolidate power. #TBSky

Here’s an idea 💡 What would happen if instead of authors being paid an advance by a publishing house, authors were given a salary? 1/3

Who watched HITMAN on Netflix over the weekend? What did you think? I was worried when I saw an editing mistake in the opening credits. It did not get better from there. Some great moments but it was almost like they ran out of time to fully edit the movie and just had to turn it in.

Interesting conversation happening on another platform today about publishers lack of transparency on paying authors. Many authors never see their advance until the book is nearing completion. Has this been your experience?

I got the best news today from one of the artists whose work went out in the Heritage Auction that someone who bought a drawing from him long ago, and sold it for a lot more recently, is sending him 10% of the profits. So the idea of cutting in the artists is starting to catch on. And I'm glad.

Please don't ask authors to speak at your Banned Books Week programs this fall if you're not going to pay them. Now more than ever, authors need to be compensated for their work. Asking authors to work for free in this moment is unacceptable and disrespectful.
