I know, the point is prices. But Taiko drums trump prices.

how are they custom? I could use something like that--the earplugs that they hand out at indoor taiko drum concerts always fall out of my ears! (Yes, my life is weird!)

Sums up the situation really well. It is not just the museum, it is how much of what makes us a vibrant city are we willing to lose? Gift article. share.inquirer.com/fvZtbO

There’s a lot of love for the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. Where’s the rescue?
No white knight appears to be coming to the rescue, and that's probably because there is no carefully constructed plan of saving the museum.

30 years ago many, if not most, of my students viewed classes as a hoop they had to jump through to get a piece of paper that would guarantee them a cushy job. They were sure they already knew all they needed to do these apocryphal jobs. AI just feeds that certainty.

They broke up the University of the Arts with one week notice and sold off the buildings to developers. Yet another board is poised to sell off a 200-year old museum of natural sciences for condos. Constituencies don't seem to be part of the equation.

In Philadelphia the constituency is the board of directors, which is often made up in good part by real estate developers who take any opportunity to sell off the their institution to develop the buildings for condos.

I am sure Trump is gleefully on board, but the GOP have been fighting for this since it happened. They have become so overtly toxic because they still resent the humiliation and the consequences. We live in the nightmare of their "Never again" every time they win a majority.

Since I heard about the AI companies that are scarfing up all the rare books, feeding them into their AI blenders, and then throwing away pages, I have been thinking about Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, and I've been wondering what book I should be memorizing.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

The academy was founded in 1812 and the museum has been in that location for 200 years, so I don't think anyone anticipated they'd need to protect it from developers. They are realizing it now, though.

They are definitely more interested in the “big fancy professors should be teaching more” part of students not getting their money’s worth, but they want less supply teaching as well, though more from what school should provide. The teachers do seem to be in a different issue box

So students do not have pedagogical interaction with the scholars that give the school its reputation and don’t get the same attention they would from a teacher with a steady job who doesn’t need to get halfway across town to their next job

Dems are concerned that more highly paid tenured professors at research universities often do little teaching, which is increasingly done by PhDs hoping for a break while teaching at multiple schools and relying on food assistance and Medicaid

The Fauci fiasco has legs because people are still angry and scared about the pandemic. We got it right so fast, but there were stumbles along the way. So instead of being comforted that we found a solution, they were left torn between scientific method and snake oil. And they are mad about that too
