If Cyberdyne didn't warn about the possibility of Skynet learning at a geometric rate and going to war against humanity in their annual report, they could be hit with a HUGE shareholder lawsuit.

Today I finally accomplished something I've wanted to do for a while: ride a bike from PKU to the 2nd Ring Road, do a complete loop, and come back out. 50.2km in 4.25 hours. All on a Meituan share bike. 1/2

From the man who in 2013 said "“Over time, the rise of the Internet will inexorably diminish the role of money in politics". That didn't work out so well. I don't think any of his prognostications about tech have worked out, why should we listen to him on this?

Exactly this. I often run into non-academics who assume that as a white male in academia I must live in terror of wokeness, and I try to tell them about people like this guy who should have been fired years ago, and then they tell me I don't know what things are really like. 1/2

We need a term for the situation where you put off preparing a slide deck because you're pretty sure you can reuse slides from a talk you gave a year ago, but then the day before the talk when you open up that slide deck, it turns out that you imagined everything and there are no usable slides.

I have no problem with people who turn down review invitations, or never reply. What I do find very frustrating is invitees who commit, and then when the deadline passes, ghost us, requiring us to go out and look for new reviewers. 1/5

Not a coincidence that here in HK the size and quality of the applicant pools for undergraduate and postgraduate study, and for regular faculty searches, has been skyrocketing.

I was just thinking the same thing. When I was growing up, Dolly Parton was a household name, but 90% of references to her were about her appearance, and it was not until much later that I understood what a tremendous talent and humanitarian she was.

I guess it's kind of hard to view the dismissal of one grublike phrenologist as a major hit to free speech after major American universities have in the past year banned the use of words and eliminated entire departments in the hopes of pleasing the senile president

Periodically I wake up at 3am with an ear worm of some song, or at least a chorus or hook, playing on repeat in my head, usually from a song I haven't heard in years. A couple months ago it was a 7 or 8 note sequence from a song I knew was from the 1970s, but I didn't know the name. 1/3

Worse scandals erupt every few months in academia, yet none of them trigger existential opining like this, even when they should. When a white man like Puliafito or Tessier-Lavigne gets busted, it's always treated as the story of a talented but flawed individual, 1/2

You know what's gotten monotonically better since 1986? Air travel. Planes rarely crash now. They route planes around turbulence. They don't allow smoking on flights anymore. Newer planes are pressurized to lower altitudes and higher humidity. Tickets are cheaper. Security is much better.

I always wonder if the consultants who advise Dems/Labour took one intro Poli Sci course in college that covered the median voter theorem and instead of seeing it as description of a situation that only arises when ceteris parabis assumptions hold, they saw it as a brilliant strategy. 1/2
