I think I read somewhere that it has been possible for decades to build small reactors, which is why they're used in subs and aircraft carriers, the hard part is making them cost competitive. There are returns to scale for reactors so it makes more economic sense to build big ones than small ones.

I think I did get some improvement by wiping with a baking powder solution, following some instructions on the web, but in the end still felt like something from a David Cronenberg body horror movie.

Also had a weird problem where all the soles of our Ecco shoes disintegrated or peeled off within a year or two of arriving in HK. Other shoes were all fine.

I'm so happy to learn we're not the only ones with problems with certain plastics in heat and humidity. After we moved from LA to HK the polyurethane wheels on our roller bags all disintegrated and stuff like buttons on remotes and the textured grips on camera lenses got gross and sticky.

A picture of downtown Beijing, including the CBD, taken from Xiangshan on a very clear day. The last time I was at Xiangshan was in 1990, and it was similarly clear, but I think between 1995 and 2015 or so probably not so clear. The improvement in air quality in the last decade or so is amazing.
