In this vivid 1874 print from the series Kyōsai Rakuga (Kyōsai’s Amusing Pictures), master artist Kawanabe Kyōsai presents a sublime, satirical take on the legendary Muromachi-period courtesan Jigoku Dayū (The Hell Courtesan).

Reclining in serene repose with her cheek resting upon her hand, she is draped in an opulent crimson mantle echoing the iconography of Bodhidharma or a meditating Zen patriarch. Beneath her outer hood, her elaborate kimono reveals glimpses of hellfire and menacing oni (demons), a poignant visual testament to her legendary origin: a high-class courtesan who chose the name "Hell" as a constant meditation on karma, illusion, and spiritual awakening. Beside her feet, a young kamuro (apprentice) slumbers in matching vermilion silk, anchoring the lower foreground in absolute quietude while an extraordinary spectral dreamscape unfolds above them.

The kinetic energy of the composition explodes within the cloud-like realm of her sleep, where Kyōsai unleashes his famed macabre humor through a teeming procession of lively skeletons. Far from a terrifying vision of the underworld, these bony revelers engage in the quintessential pastimes of human culture and the pleasure quarters—clinking shallow cups of sake, locking in cerebral combat over a go board, plucking stringed instruments, dancing wildly, and even composing refined ikebana (flower arrangements) alongside wooden grave markers (otoba). Kyōsai directly invokes the radical Zen teachings of monk Ikkyū Sōjun, the historical master who converted Jigoku Dayū by reminding her that beneath the finest brocades, powder, and youthful beauty of the demimonde lies nothing more than an identical skeletal frame.

Published in the early Meiji era—a period marked by rapid Westernization and social transformation—Kyōsai's woodblock print employs playful fantasy (kyōga) to interrogate the enduring Buddhist concept of mujō (impermanence). Kyōsai’s graphic execution is exceptionally nimble, contrasting the solid, sculptural mass of the courtesan’s red drapery with the nimble, line-driven choreography of the skeleton crew.
