A sign - in Dorset - that says 'MILITARY FIRING RANGE', with a red line struck through somebody in big-heeled shoes who looks like he might be in a 1976 episode of the TV show Soul Train. In the distance, if you look hard, you can just make out a hat that I have dropped

By posting this a few times here I've singlehandedly revived a book that was at one point dead due to my ex-publishers collapsing, not paying me for it and taking it out of print. People who read it often love it. People who don't read it sometimes get irritated. The latter is not my concern.

A friend told me he had been clearing out his gran’s house. While he was there he found a knitted effigy of the man who had run off and abandoned my friend’s pregnant aunt. Into the effigy had been stuck twenty knitting needles: one for every year since the man had vanished.

How many bodies would you guess the average country churchyard in Britain contains? When I’ve asked most people this, their answer has usually been “a few hundred” or “maybe a thousand”. The truth is usually at least ten thousand.

Wildflowers love dead people.
Wildflowers, a couple of springs ago, in the churchyard in Buckfastleigh, Devon. This is actually a very spooky spot in winter as it's the resting place of the allegedly Satanic Squire Richard Cabell - inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle's Baskerville legend - whose corpse is boxed in by a somewhat incongruous structure, a little pagoda-ish, but also not unlike the kind of public toilet you might find in a small British town, which sits on the south side of the church. Do NOT walk around it backwards as the Devil will bite your fingers and Cabell will release his hell hounds. Also, the church has been burned down by Satanists not once but TWICE in the last couple of centuries. (I wrote about all this in more detail in my book 21st-Century Yokel, and a couple of the scarier gravestones inspired bits in my novel Villager.

Not only is Annie Proulx just about my favourite living writer, I've endless envy for the fact that prior to publishing her first fiction, in her 50s, she warmed up with a series of guidebooks about making cider, walls and gates and growing your own vegetables and grapes. Absolute dream career path.
A list of Annie Proulx's early non-fiction, including 1983's Plan and Make Your Own Fences & Gates, Walkways, Walls & Drives.

Despite being disappointed by how fresh and untarnished the paint was, I did actually let temptation get the better of me and open this lovely little door in an old wall, at which point I was greeted by the sight of a small wizened priest, masturbating, while staring determinedly at a thistle, leading me to flee the scene immediately and repair to the nearest branch of the breakfast and lunch food chain Boston Tea Party to recuperate. Which just goes to show that sometimes it's best to keep a door in a wall shut and solely imagine the things that might be behind it. They are nearly always more pleasant than the reality.

“This is where we keep the Owl Man until nightfall.”
An old barn I found on a walk in mid-Cornwall, whose doors and windows get progressively more intriguing as they get higher off the ground. My assumption is that the small square gap in the upper door is where the owl flies in and the bottom door is where he comes out in his full human-size form at midnight, prior to terrorising the residents of nearby farmsteads and cottages.

I like to think the somewhat terrifying Green Man carving above this door in a wall on the south edge of Dartmoor is actually a granite portrait of the house's 1000-year-old owner. As you might be able to see, he currently has the builders in, who are replacing the roof on his house for the first time since 1308.

An impressively solid wooden door in a stone archway, surrounded by a granite wall, which, if you open it with a special massive key, will take you directly to a version of the 14th Century with no plague and significantly more psychedelic music and witchcraft.

Our new living room. The records fit uncannily well into their new nook, although that probably means it's one-in-one-out from here on. You'll also notice a large orange horse in the right hand side of the photo. I have no idea where he came from. He's not ours.

I've often said: I'd rather write an entire book, any day, than a 1000 word pitch for a book. The books that sound sexy & marketable as a pitch are just the kind I don't want to write. I'm not writing a book because I know what it's about, or how it ends. I'm writing it precisely to find that out.

Cats tell you a lot about time, about its preciousness, about its hard facts. Cats tell you that summer 2021 isn’t summer 2022, like you’d thought. You live with cats all your life and eventually can’t help but begin to measure your life in cats. Those measurements can be sobering. My childhood cats and early adulthood cats are all gone, all but one of my full adulthood cats too, and I’m now fully in middle-aged person cat phase. Fucking hell, is that the time already? Remind me what the next stage is, and the one after that? Actually, on second thoughts, don’t. Leave me here a bit longer, suspended in soft delusion. But also all this is messed up because if there was any justice cats would live longer than us. Cats should live as long as other bibliophile animals such as tortoises and bowhead whales. Longer, perhaps, as they have better comic timing and far more to offer on a cold winter’s night.
