I'm sure I'm not the first person to point out this has been a cottage industry for a few years now. Psychology with Dr. Ana has a whole range of videos talking about this and dissecting several books on the subject and it gets repetitive listening to them because they heavily copy from each other.

I will say the accessibility arguments have always been extremely funny to me, especially when it comes to framing artists as the ultimate gatekeepers of the craft while just ignoring how all the raw materials and stuff artists need cost money to access. Painters don’t own the canvas manufacturers.

Entertaining episode, do recommend if you can stomach some of the harder subject matter. I did have a thought that stuck out of me consistently listening to it is how much the author just seems to dislike talking to people. His pushing in favor of stuff other than talk therapy seems to reflect this.

So I'm watching this and the section around 50 minutes in where he's complaining about a dance hall having a "bar simulation". Given that this islikely a public/commercial event space, it's just a normal bar that happens to be serving soda because it's an event for minors.

Yeah I feel like people genuinely don’t have like an actual sense of proportionality withe these types of things. Chances are someone was already kinda feeling iffy about it internally and they just had a forum post with some engagement they could use to convince their boss to change it.

I do just want to say, looking at the ~320$ a month figure. Growing up in the 90s-00s my mom would spend an average of about 100$ a week on groceries to feed herself and two kids. That was over 20 years ago, that’s barely enough to cover half a month now.

This was the most fascinating exchange to me. Coates asks whether a liberal going to Evangelical churches and selectively editing exchanges to mock Christians would be "doing politics the right way." Klein says it would if it were done completely differently.

But would you like to see one of us put up a sign outside of, say, some white evangelical church in Alabama: Debate me on abortion? And then use that content to say: Such and such “smashes” church parishioner? Or: Such and such “owns” church parishioner?

Would you like to see a version of that?

I would like to see people on our side, yes, go to evangelical churches. Go to places that feel unfriendly, have conversations.

Look, I put up things on YouTube.

They’re fairly successful — not the best of the business — and I don’t use “destroys” in capital letters in them.

I think you can do it more aligned to, hopefully, our value structure, our political approach, our political aesthetic. At least the one that I believe in. I shouldn’t overuse the term “our” here. But we weren’t doing that, either.

I will say while I have joked a bit about Kirk’s death I do think under ideal circumstances most of us wouldn’t even know who Kirk was. He wouldn’t be a famous person, he wouldn’t be receiving dark money, he should be like a prominent figure in local politics as a crank.

I will say if you look at the historical record there’s been a bunch of high profile cases of police departments being unable to adequately respond in the moment to a situation to stop it then using their own failure as a post hoc justification for funding. (e.g. the 1997 North Hollywood shootout)

I will say I do genuinely find the discussions around art from the AI evangelists to be extremely interesting in the sense that it kind of highlights how the medium of “art” is kind of flattened in some discussions. Yeah cool ChatGPT can doodle a cat in a hat but it can’t say make a sculpture of it.
