Just noticed this... are these all glass corridors? They need to be made bird friendly as this is a hazard to wildlife otherwise.

Anytime we see funds being allocated for renovations or new builds, they should include a requirement for bird-friendly (aka prevent glass-heavy hazard designs that are untreated & lethal for birds) as a requirement to receive funding. Please keep an eye for out for such and write letters. Tks!
Screen capture of part of the quoted CBC link which says: Independent schools approved for capital funding will receive up to $10 million for renovations, new builds, expansions, modular classrooms or other changes that increase student space, according to the program page.
They cannot use the money to buy land or fund...

Brilliant! Safe birds (from Kitties) and safe kitties!! (Now if you find some marked glass AND kitties, we shall die extra happy!!😍) @featherfriendly #birdsafephilly
A backlit cat walks indoors past a window marked with Feather Friendly window markings. A win-win for birds (and cats certainly deserve to be kept safe indoors!). Model cat = Obi. 💕

Shared. I opened the map link which connects to the application docs but I don't see the referenced docs? Curious about those.
Screenshot of docs referencing another document ("Doc. 6. Appropriate Assessment") and that document isn't apparent in the links.

Gorgeous kitty! Mmmm may we request treating that glass pretty please?
A poster with a waxwing with a head injury. Poster reads:

"A bird hit my window!!
What do I do??"
STEP 1 - HELP THE BIRD (NOW!)
Waiting for injured birds to "recover" on their own is NOT advisable! Serious hidden injuries are common and may cause suffering or death if not treated. When a bird survives hitting a window, it needs your help.... now.
• Zoonotic diseases are on the increase. Always wear a mask and gloves. Stay safe!
• Immediately secure the bird in a dark box or clean paper bag.
• Place in a safe, quiet area away from pets and out of direct sun.
• Please - NO selfies / handling. Human presence stresses wildlife, especially when hurt.
• Never offer water or food to injured wildlife - this can seriously harm them.
• Locate your nearest certified Wildlife Rehab and contact them for specific instructions:
• Calgary Wildlife at (403) 214-1812 or AIWC at (403) 946-2361
• NOTE: Apparent recovery (fluttering in box) does NOT mean the bird is uninjured! It still needs a full exam.
STEP 2 - TREAT GLASS EFFECTIVELY
Prevention is key! Every window strike causes population loss and individual suffering. We EACH hold responsibility to reduce hazards. It's time to mark your glass!
• Check reputable websites for options on marking your glass, such as ours or FLAP's.
• To prevent birds from navigating between treated areas and striking:
• Maximum 2" space between decals or other window film markings like Feather Friendly.
• Maximum 4* between paracords on Acopian BirdSavers / Zen curtains
• Hawk and leaf type decals are NOT effective (unless spaced 2" from each other)
• Treatments need to be easily seen and on exterior of the glass.
• If you are renting or part of a condo, please advocate for a solution and/or apply effective solutions as per above, that may be allowed under your bylaws or lease.
• Do not wait for yet another bird to hit your window. Act now.
STEP 1B - Please help us

This wings-in bullet profile is one of the reasons window mitigation needs to be properly spaced. Birds fly fast and can dart through tight spaces. Markings directly on glass have to be 2" apart max, and span the entire surface. Thanks for the share!
A window with hand marked pattern. Using an oil-based marker, to create VISIBLE markings, on the EXTERIOR of the window, NO SPACES greater than 2" have been left across the whole surface. This is an effectively marked window. Birds should not be at risk here.

Honestly it hurts my heart to think another animal lover would ever consider this amusing. It’s truly not. By not marking your glass, you are causing harm. Thanks for keeping kitties inside! That’s awesome but your glass requires treatment. Thank you!

If you want to have your heart broken, find a Brown Creeper that needlessly because of an unmarked window and confusing lights. All losses hurt. Brown creepers come with a gut punch. Here’s one that died in Calgary on October 5, 2021. 💔😡 Save the little brown creepy birds. And all the birds.
A deceased bird lays on its back. It’s still dark outside. The flashlight is lighting up its wee body. The stick tail feathers that Brown Creepers use to scale trees are clearly seen as is its cute little curled bill. They look more like Gonzo. Adorable. Unique. Special. Important. And dying under unmarked windows in overly lit places.

Dirty windows are definitely not effective. Sorry. Feather Friendly is one of the best solutions out there. Of course nothing is entirely fool proof but we all must make things as safe as possible. Feeder location needs to be FAR or right at building AND mark all glass.
Bird Friendly Calgary says:
"Mark your glass!
BIRD FRIENDLY CITY
CALGARY, AB
Save the birds!"
Mark the exterior / 2 inches apart!
Collisions can happen at any building, especially our homes.
Make an immediate impact - EFFECTIVELY mark your glass!
• Mark the EXTERIOR of windows and glass railings
• Leave only 2 inch gaps (think of birds darting through branches - hawk or leaf stickers* are NOT effective alone!)
• Multiple options: 2" apart decals (eg Feather Friendly), markers, vertical lines of soap, Acopian Birdsavers (parachute cord)
• Where a bird can see through to other outside environment (a
"fly through"), please also close one curtain/blind to block view.
If a bird hits your window, place in a dark box and contact your local Wildlife Rehab. Even if it's recovering, do NOT release without Wildlife Rehab advice - internal injuries are common!
* Learn more about the questionable effectiveness of UV products before using.

By marking one’s glass (effectively!), it’s one of the most immediate and individually powerful conservation effort one can make….becoming a safe habitat in one’s own space IMMEDIATELY saving birds.
Poster that says:

Collisions can happen at any building, especially our homes.
Make an immediate impact - EFFECTIVELY mark your glass!
• Mark the EXTERIOR of windows and glass railings
• Leave only 2 inch gaps (think of birds darting through branches - hawk or leaf stickers* are NOT effective alone!)
• Multiple options: 2" apart decals (eg Feather Friendly), markers, vertical lines of soap. Acopian Birdsavers (parachute cord) can be 4” apart.

A “Banff” in the UK, you say? Oh my! I didn’t realize! Now I’m wondering if Banff, AB 🇨🇦 is named for Banff, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🤔 Hmm! Love this. Hoping everyone stays safe with that crummy weather.

#Birder friends! Have you had a #lifer recently? What was it? Also….have you marked your glass at home? Are birds safe flying near your dwelling?

First step to truly care for an #UrbanEnvironment? Mark. One’s. Glass. Millions of birds dying and how many have actually taken that step at their home? At their office? Honestly, nearly none and it’s not okay. #MarkYourGlass #DoYourPart

Happy holidays everyone! Had a lovely visit at @owlsnestbooks today. Bad news is they are sold out of Julya Hajnoczky’s calendar. The GREAT news is it can be ordered in for the new year! Yay! Support a fabulous local artist and a fabulous local bookstore with one purchase!

If applying #GooglyEyes to your windows, remember to place them on exterior and leave no more than 2” gaps between them. Must cover entire reflective or transparent surface to be effective. Thank youuuuu!

#VolumeUp! Dark-eyed Juncos having a noisy time in an # UrbanHabitat in Kelowna BC. I believe there are two sub-species here. Oregon and slate. Love a confirmation. Enjoy! DEJU’s are terrible for striking glass. Pls mark your windows. If not for these guys…then for who?

Sadly, pigeons suffer a whole lot of window strikes. We have had several rescues and each one is just such a sweetheart!! Speedy’s tale in the #AltText.
Speedy!!! This super sleek (slightly dorky) pigeon was racing back n forth across traffic downtown Calgary and suddenly didn’t reappear. Lucky for him, he was dashing over a CUSRT volunteer (me this time! Kath here!) leaving a survey shift and she knew what had happened. Pulling safely over to the side, sure enough there was this bird. A tall white pigeon. Shocked as shocked can be! Poor dear ran smack dab into a pedestrian overpass. This absolute love led the world’s slowest footchase keeping JUST ahead of the net for a good half hour before being nabbed. Speedy was rehabilitated and later released. The offending pedestrian overpass showing the white powdery residue where Speedy stopped speeding. (Lower left side just above the dark line). Rapidly.

Looks like some of the starter pack include ecological trauma too. It’s excellent! Thanks so much for sharing! We created a drop in zoom for the window strike community to just chat and share. Setting up more dates, but signups are welcome anytime. Bit.ly/windowstrikecafe

Oh Melissa. 😭. I remember Dan @ubermoogle.bsky.social teaching me about juncos and Oregon or Slate and also w/Dan picking 2 up side by side at a window (one fallen on road). Each individual bird sticks with us. I don’t think people realize how they do. Mark your glass, friends! Save the juncos!
Found on a Fall 2019 survey of downtown Calgary (near a 2nd one), a deceased Dark-eyed Junco is seen laying with its beautiful flashy tail feathers showing. It is laying on concrete next to a steel tree grate. The corner of a brown. rescue / collection kit is seen in the corner too.
Please mark your glass. Speak with your building manager about following the CSA guidelines for window strike abatement.

Did you know celebrated @margaretatwood.bsky.social is a proponent of #BirdFriendlyCities & @naturecanada.bsky.social? It’s true! ❤️ Huge shoutout to the Producers of #HandsmaidsTail for including marked glass in a major scene! 👏. Helps to inspire its further use. Thanks! #BirdFriendlyProduction
These large glass windows first caught my eye as a risk (we can’t unsee all the types of glass we have found birds) but was thrilled to notice the dots! The glass is fully and beautifully marked with a bird friendly dot matrix. Probably #FeatherFriendly. Highlighting bird-friendly products in popular media is extremely important. It normalizes its presence, and hopefully inspires far more people to ensure they are not part of the problem. Please point out such observations and thank the producers. The dots are barely discernible behind this actor. But they are there and they are magnificent!! 👏👏👏.

This is a zoomed in image of a TV screen showing O-T Fagbenle (playing Luke) in what appears to be a restaurant overlooking a park.

Dots save birds. Producers who demonstrate their use save even more birds. Because more people will use dots! (Or other effective methods to keep birds from striking glass). Photo of a TV screen with a paused image. Elizabeth Moss (Offred) and O-T Fagbente are sitting in a large room like a restaurant with large windows overlooking perhaps a park or rink. On the windows (celebrate with us!!) are patterned dots applied on the exterior with a density that will make a huge difference to birds that may otherwise strike the glass.

Well done Margaret Atwood and the Producers of #TheHandmaidsTale!

Oh you’re absolutely wonderful! There are other options too. Here are a few I had success with experimenting at our home in Calgary.
Window with tiny stars approx 2” apart on the window of a home. To be effective, markings on glass need to be:
- on exterior of surface
- on whole surface (eg don’t miss edges or centre)
- no gaps larger than 2”
- visible (if you can’t readily see it, birds can’t either)
Oil-based marking painting on garage window. Don’t forget out-buildings and small structures like bus stops, glass doors and sheds.

This one is an image of garden of flowers. It’s only white marker on glass. It can be left like this or for fun and extra colour it can be painted.

To be effective, markings on glass need to be:
- on exterior of surface
- on whole surface (eg don’t miss edges or centre)
- no gaps larger than 2”
- visible (if you can’t readily see it, birds can’t either)
Oil-based marker called “the Pumper”. These can be purchased at many hardware stores. This one was purchased at The Wild Bird Store in Calgary.

I’ve used this to make small polka dots or really detailed markings like a whole garden scene or a farm scene. It lasts for a few years until it needs a refresh or it can be removed with a blade for glass (or elbow grease). It survived several window washings too.

To be effective, markings on glass need to be:
- on exterior of surface
- on whole surface (eg don’t miss edges or centre)
- no gaps larger than 2”
- visible (if you can’t readily see it, birds can’t either)The same garage window as in previous photo. Lines are made with oil-based marker to create a garden with plants from top to bottom and added imagines of a spider hanging from its web and more to help fill space and meet the 2” rule.

In this case, I took it a step further and used ordinary tempura paint to bring colour to the space as it was an appropriate spot for a bit of cheer.

To be effective, markings on glass need to be:
- on exterior of surface
- on whole surface (eg don’t miss edges or centre)
- no gaps larger than 2”
- visible (if you can’t readily see it, birds can’t either)

Oh that stinks. Also! They are much bigger than many of us imagine! Our team rescued one downtown Calgary in 2019. Had to drive down with a larger container for transport. It was chonky!
Photo of an injured Kingfisher. It’s upright but laying on the concrete among some leaves. In this case, the building’s security flagged down our team. The bird was transported to Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society but sadly it did not recover.

Lights out by 11PM! (to 6AM)
Spring Migration: April & May
Fall Migration: August to November
Many birds migrate at night and need a dark sky to navigate. Bright lights draw them into our city where they often strike glass.
We need the help of businesses, schools and offices to keep birds en route.
By 11:00 PM, please extinguish* all non-critical exterior lights, decorative roof/facade lights, LED signage 8 close the blinds.
(*Please dim when extinguishing not possible.)
Thank you!

A home with a window treated with Feather Friendly window markings (2” by 2” dots applied to exterior off glass to be effective in deterring window strikes). Also in picture is a cat safe inside the home, staring out the window. This cat is particularly cute with large relaxed ears and is perhaps a grey tabby with golden eyes. A home at night. The dark sky behind with streetlights and light from inside the home muted with closed blinds. The light is reflecting on the snow on the ground. We ask everyone to keep the outside as dark as possible from 11pm to 6am for bird safety, bat health and safety, for plant health, and yes even for human health! The City of Calgary at night with the moon over the skyscrapers. We ask all buildings to turn off all unnecessary lights from 11pm to 6am. This helps so much to keep migrating wildlife on their path and to help reduce sky glow, allow bats to hunt safely at night and so much more!A picture of two beautiful cats perched happily side by side on a soft bench indoors. They are looking outside with their tails curled at the tips. Super cute! Keeping cats inside keeps them safe from so many dangers and keeps wildlife safe outside.
