NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The amazing Giuseppe Petricca has only gone and photographed the Sun at noon there, every few days, for a whole year. #Dedication 🔭🧪👌 ℹ️: science.nasa.gov/image-articl...
The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

Tools of a Bat Biologist: Bat Detectors 🦇 Bats navigate and hunt using ultrasonic calls—sounds too high for us to hear. Bat detectors bring those calls into our hearing range and allow biologists to record and examine them. What can we learn by listening to bats? A thread… 1/2

A hand-colored illustration from my 1869 copy of ‘Canadian Wild Flowers’ by Agnes Dunbar Fitzgibbon, considered “one of the first serious botanical works published in Canada.” The accompanying text (added to alt text) is by her aunt, Canadian naturalist Catharine Parr Traill. 🇨🇦 🌱 🥀
An illustration centered on a yellow orchid. To its right are several blue irises and below a small species of orchid. Parr’s description of the yellow orchid: Ballot Daup's Slippers.
Cypripèdium parviforum and Cypripèdium pubéscens.
"And golden slippers meet for Faries' feet."
HIS ornamental family are remarkable alike for the singular beauty of their flowers, and the peculiar arrangement of the internal organs. In the Linnæan classification they were included in common, with all the Orchis tribe, in
the class Gynandria, but in the Natural Order of Jussieu, which we have followed, the "Lady's Slipper" (Cypripèdium), forms one of the sub-orders in the general Order ORCHIDACEE.
Of the two species represented in our Artist's group, the larger and central flower is Cypripèdium pubéscens, the smaller, C. parviflorum, or LESSER LADY's SLIPPEr. The latter is, perhaps, the more elegant and graceful plant, and is also somewhat fragrant. The sepals and petals are longer and more spiral, but the colouring of the lip is not so rich and vivid as in the larger flower, C. Pubéscens.”
