under stressful conditions, E. coli may initiate its SOS response to downregulate cell division while continuing to make copies of its genome, resulting in filamentous, multinucleoid cells like this one. if conditions improve, the cell can then divide at multiple sites to yield multiple progeny. 🤓🔬
E. coli bacteremia (Gram stain)

This photomicrograph was taken at ×1000 magnification after the specimen had incubated for ≈12 h. under anaerobic conditions. A filamentous E. coli cell from the top-right quadrant of the same photomicrograph.

anyway did y’all know bacteria age? 💀
This depiction of a rod-shaped bacterium like _E. coli_ undergoing three rounds of binary fission demonstrates how bacterial cells accumulate “aging factors” asymmetrically between progeny across generations. Since, generally speaking, these bacteria divide by elongating and then separating at their centers, each division produces two daughter cells with “old” lateral aspects and “new” medial aspects, relative to the parent cell.

ask any of your conservative relatives verbatim, “Would the Lord approve of this imagery? Do you find it Christ-like?” and watch them squirm as they attempt to reckon with their cognitive dissonances lmao

hello???????
Naoji Uezono, a member of Unit 731, described in a 1980s interview a grisly scene where Yoshimura had "two naked men put in an area 40-50 degrees below zero and researchers filmed the whole process until [the subjects] died. [The subjects] suffered such agony they were digging their nails into each other's flesh." Yoshimura's lack of remorse was evident in an article he wrote for the Japanese Journal of Physiology in 1950 in which he admitted to using 20 children and a three-day-old infant in experiments which exposed them to zero-degree-Celsius ice and salt water. Although this article drew criticism, Yoshimura denied any guilt when contacted by a reporter from the Mainichi Shimbun.

the thing that these pieces (and the public at large) seems to miss is that, given the exposure, these kids would've been radicalized in the streets of IRC chat rooms, too.
The headline of an NBC News article by Kevin Collier, published on September 24, 2025, reads, "Extremists are using discord to radicalize American youth, officials warned this year." Directly below it, the slug line reads, "Discord has drawn increased attention in recent weeks after reports that the suspect in Charlie Kirk's killing used the platform."

finishing up my first round of analyses on the transcriptomic EDS variome! 🧪
This image shows a genomic visualization interface displaying transcriptomic variome data. At the top, there are tabs for multiple genes (FKBP14, KLK15, MTHFR, PLOD1, PRDM5, SLC39A13, TNXB, ZNF469) with an option to show UTR variants and a slider to adjust the maximum variants displayed per gene (currently set to 100).

The main content shows "EDS: Transcriptomic Variome" with a genomic browser view displaying 1,715 variants across 22 genes. Four genes are visualized as horizontal tracks: ZNF469 (13,770 bp), TNXB (13,143 bp), SLC39A13 (2,429 bp), and PRDM5 (2,492 bp). Each track shows the gene structure as gray bars with various colored dots above representing different types of variants. The legend indicates variant types: "del" (deletion), "delins" (deletion-insertion), "dup" (duplication), "identity", "ins" (insertion), and "sub" (substitution), each represented by different colored dots (red, green, purple, blue, pink, and orange respectively).

After learning that @ehlersdanlos.bsky.social maintains a curation on the Leiden Open Variation Database, I've decided to begin an independent, dry study on genotypic variance in the pathogenesis of the Ehlers–Danlos Syndromes! So far, I've analyzed the reference sequences for these 22 genes. 🧪
Bar chart showing number of CpG islands across genes related to Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes. ADAMTS5 has the highest count at ~32 islands, while most other genes range from 1-22 islands, with notable peaks at DSE (~22) and COL5A1 (~19).Bar chart displaying G/C content ratios by gene, ranging from approximately 0.35 to 0.65. Most genes cluster between 0.4-0.6, with ZNF469 showing one of the highest ratios (~0.64) and COL3A1 among the lowest (~0.37).Grouped bar chart showing nucleotide frequency per kilobase across genes. Each bar is divided into colored segments representing adenine (purple), thymine (green), cytosine (blue), guanine (yellow), and ambiguous bases (pink). Most genes show relatively balanced nucleotide distributions with frequencies ranging from ~150-350 per kilobase.Grouped bar chart displaying total nucleotide frequencies by gene. Shows dramatic variation in gene sizes, with some genes like PRDM5 reaching ~77k total nucleotides while others like CHST14 and B3GALT6 have much smaller counts, well under 10k. Color coding matches previous image for nucleotide types.
