Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 11hOf the 34 students in class today, 4 had “heard of” passive voice, but 0 could describe what it was or related to. That said, this was perhaps the most engaged this particular class has been this semester. So I’ll take that as a win? 0160

It's not what I wanted out of my "Our Monsters, Our Selves" exploration of the humanities (and it's definitely not something I'm trained to do), but it's what these kids need. 2251
Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 11/10/2026Last week we subtly explored thesis statements (how to make them analytic and not descriptive) while discussing mermaids as monsters/beasts, this week we're going to start with passive voice while discussing unicorns as monsters/beasts. 0160

Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 05/10/2026But, now they’re letting students post mid-semester to classes they’re not even registered for at unis they don’t attend? End of semester is bad enough, but earning a low grade (ie. not a 100%) & being able to talk trash in the first months of a class? wth. 020

Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Small, but consistent, errors I've noticed that have become commonplace in undergrad writing: - titles not in italics or quotation marks; they're just hanging out in the text - no capitalization; not of names, places, titles, etc. - so little punctuation 2163
Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Caught a student writing a paper with AI. Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Students are struggling with the difference between the thesis & the focus of the paper (ie. (b) what is a thesis? 3140

Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Yes time consuming & not effective in large lectures. I’m not sure I’d want to do it. But discussing strategies about how to ensure integrity (& fairness among students) is important. This is one strategy that’s been suggested, of many. It won’t be for everyone/every situation. But, performative? 000
Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 13/09/2026How is ensuring academic integrity performative? 100
Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 12/09/2026This makes so much sense! I can’t imagine doing it for every assignment. But big, research focused ones? It makes absolute sense - both for AI checking AND the learning process. 020

Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Other tricks & Trojan horses have gone viral, so they’re not useful anymore. Students know them. They have their own too. Unfortunately, that means to ensure integrity & fairness, that likely means more work for us. Yes, even in large classes. It sucks, but maybe the alternative sucks worse? 050
Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 12/09/2026And to do that, yes, I check citations. Seems most of us do, fwiw. As far as I can tell, fabricated citations remain the easiest & most conclusive way to see if a paper was written by AI. It’s hard to argue that a paper that doesn’t exist does, or a quote is not written like that or on that page. 170
Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 12/09/2026The debate, small as it is, has gotten interesting. No, I’m not here to police my students work. But I am here to ensure academic integrity & fairness for my students. As it turns out, my students want that fairness. They want to do their own work, but also hate seeing cheaters get better grades. 171
Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 12/09/2026I hadn’t considered the anonymous grading that occurs some places. That does throw a wrench in this sort of system, but I think the workaround above could prove useful for certain assignments. 030
Courtney (Dr. Version) @cakrolik.bsky.social · 12/09/2026I’ve got plenty of colleagues who have told me they either do this in their courses and/or they were required to do this when they were in undergrad. So, yeah, people do actually do this. 130
