Now that I've been thinking about this (and maybe I need to put a tinfoil hat on), is this the work of AI humanizers? I've never seen such slop turned in before this last year. Names of main figures in the paper misspelled throughout, in multiple different ways, random words capitalized, all of it.

If you are a graduate student in the humanities (construed as broadly as possible), what is the MOST EXCITING book published in the last five years to you? Please repost if you’re not a graduate student!

Small, but consistent, errors I've noticed that have become commonplace in undergrad writing: - titles not in italics or quotation marks; they're just hanging out in the text - no capitalization; not of names, places, titles, etc. - so little punctuation

Caught a student writing a paper with AI. They owned up to it and then noted in their email with the resubmission: "Everyone thinks they're slick until they actually get caught." He learned his lesson, it seems. The kids are gonna be alright.

I’ve hit the “dgaf” phase apparently. Told my students today we were doing an activity that was NOT busywork, but is meant to help them with their journals bc “it’s absolutely clear to me that a lot of you are waiting until the due date to write weeks worth of journals” - lots of nervous laughter.

In this week's "how am I supposed to also teach that"?!" we have: Thesis Statements I've added in a "how do we read academic articles" portion to my intro class, using the general "three pass" method. Part of the first pass is finding the thesis.

Showed my students Nosferatu (1922) in class today. They started off twitchy with the silent film, but ended up loving it. Some even suggested that movies today should be made like this because “DUDE I ACTUALLY WATCHED A MOVIE”

The debate, small as it is, has gotten interesting. No, I’m not here to police my students work. But I am here to ensure academic integrity & fairness for my students. As it turns out, my students want that fairness. They want to do their own work, but also hate seeing cheaters get better grades.

When I was just learning the basics of math, the teachers didn't let us use calculators. Calculators were available, but the teachers recognized that using them would keep us from learning. Now, I can add and subtract, and I understand basic things about how numbers work

A decade ago, Florida stripped a teacher of her license for sexually abusing a 16-year-old. Last year, she opened a private school there with ease. As private schools fueled by taxpayer dollars proliferate, states are choosing not to closely regulate who runs them or what they teach:

As private schools proliferate, states are choosing a hands-off approach to regulating them. The backgrounds of school founders — sometimes with criminal histories — often don’t matter

For those who saw, this is exactly it. I had a “revisit the syllabus” talk with my classes & despite going over it the first day of class, they TRULY did not get that readings would not be on Canvas. Or that they needed to get a book. Or that they needed to regularly look at the syllabus.

A colleague shared a prompt for a type of primary source analysis (for a required 1st yr class, content varies by instructor). While I edited it to fit my class, I edited it in the document they sent, which apparently had an AI prompt. It took my students discovering it for me to know about it.

Anyone else experiencing a massive uptick in students not understanding that their readings, assignments, & other important dates for a course are on the syllabus? That the syllabus is the blueprint for the class? And that readings from the textbook will be noted there, & not on the course webpage?

Thanks y'all. This helped a lot more than I can express! I'd heard that adjunction was (essentially) embarrassing to put on a CV for a FT/TT position. It felt wrong. And y'all proved that feeling was correct! Adjuncts are what allows a university to tick, and we should respect that work!

It’s interesting to think about historical figures as people with jobs who also sometimes had ideas. Isaac Newton (warden of the mint), Joseph Conrad (first mate on the last era of sailing ships), Byron (being Byron)

A surprising find on this year’s “what course policy would you enact” question (beyond the fact that they don’t seem to know what “policy” refers to): At least 1/4 of my 130 students have suggested group projects of varying kinds.

Every semester on my "Syllabus Quiz" I put a True/False question that says "There is a discussion board component to this class that you will be graded on." Every semester I am surprised how many get it wrong by picking "True." Reader, I haven't ever had a discussion board in one of my classes.
