If you're an Irish speaker from abroad who's white, you're welcomed with open arms. But if you're an Irish Gaeilgeoir of colour, you're bombarded with this constant racism. We have to get better at calling this out as a community.

anecdotal but we all know from experience that if you even joke online abt killing your abuser you can get viciously dogpiled for weeks or months on end & scolded about RJ. but if a male lawyer brags on twitter about knowingly getting rapists acquitted... rape victims who get upset will be dogpiled

Agus mura bhfuil an tsochaí féin saor, tá muid daortha chun cinniúna a bhí i ndán dúinn roimhe: “i sochaí impiriúlach chiníoch phatrarcach a thacaíonn agus a bhfuil glacadh aige le leatrom, níl aon iontas ann go measann fir agus mná a bhfiúntas, a gcumhacht pearsanta trína gcumas daoine eile a chur faoi chois.” Níl an dara rogha againn ach amharc orainn féin agus ár ról i mbuanú na dtróp seo. Nuair a fhágann an impireacht ár gcolainn agus nuair a thiteann dornaisc an chaipitleachais as caolta ár lámh, beidh muid in ann an dochar a rinneadh a thuiscint agus ár samhlaíocht a oscailt chun saol difriúil.And if society itself isn’t free, then we are condemned to repeat what once was our lot: “In an imperialist racist patriarchal society that supports and condones oppression, it is not surprising that men and women judge their worth, their personal power, by their ability to oppress others”. Our only option is to turn inwards, and acknowledge our own roles in perpetuating those tropes. Once the empire leaves our bodies, and once the handcuffs of capitalism slide from our wrists, can we truly understand the harm caused and open our imagination to a different world.

Ár mbuíochas leis an údar agus leis an aistritheoir

Ghlac muid leis go bhfuil nádúr síochánta ag an chiníochas agus forbairt gluaiseachta i bhfad amach ar an eite dheas, dar le Coimisiún na Mórshiúlta, mar is é an foréigean fisiciúil an t-aon fhoréigean a thuigeann muid. Ach is iomaí cineál foréigin atá ann, foréigean an stáit san áireamh: an bhochtaineacht, easpa rochtana ar chúram sláinte, smacht reiligiúnach, carcrú na sluaite agus leithcheal ar scála domhanda, amhail is dá mbeadh sé seo ina pholasaí. Níl ach damáiste comhthaobhach atá sa chreideamh go bhfuil saincheart ar cholainneacha na mban ann agus na torthaí uafásacha a bhaineann leis sin, dar leis an stát atá ag amharc ar a dháta éaga ag teacht. We have accepted racism and far-right development as inherently peaceful, according to the Parade Commission, because physical violence is the only way we understand violence. But it takes many forms, including state violence: poverty, lack of access to health care, religious control, mass incarceration, and discrimination on an industrial scale, almost as if it was policy. The entitlement to women’s bodies and the consequences therein, however gruesome, are collateral damage to a state seeing its shelf life expire.Ní chuirfidh cealú príosúnachta stop leis an fhoréigean inscnebhunaithe. Ní teoiric fhrithghníomhach é seo ach teoiric choisctheach. Gheofaí réidh le struchtúir a bhaineann le cos ar bolg agus chruthófaí pobail ní b’idirspleácha le haird ar an tsábháilteacht mar bhunluach. Baineann an leabhar Ain’t I a Woman le bell hooks leas as taithí an fhuatha do mhná dubha agus filleann ar an bhunmhiotas gur tír na saor é na Stáit Aontaithe, cé go raibh sclábhaíocht airnéise agus cinedheighilt i bhfeidhm. Tá ionsaithe ar mhná, go háirithe ar mhná de dhath, ag tarlú le fada mar gheall ar thuairim na gcolainneacha indiúscartha.Abolition will not stop gender-based violence. It is not a theory to react but a theory of prevention. Structures of oppression would disappear, and create more interdependent communities with safekeeping as their core value. bell hooks’ Ain’t I A Woman, drawing on the misogynoir experience, returns to the very foundational myth of the United States as the land of the free, while chattel slavery was still a practice, and throughout a long regime of apartheid. The propensity to target women, and especially women of colour, are rooted in a long, centennial idea of disposable bodies.

Ach níl ár gcuid institiúidí oiriúnach don fheidhm atá leo, go háirithe sa tuaisceart, agus ní raibh siad riamh. Tá siad ar chúl forbartha polaitiúla agus buanaíonn siad an claonadh córasach céanna a sheol an bealach seo muid ar dtús. Ó dhrochmheas go neamhaird, níl íospartaigh níos gaire do cheartas cúiteach ná ceann aisiríoch. Tá achan réiteach i bhfad i gcéin agus scoite amach ón fhírinne againn: an teip atá ann, aire a thabhairt dóibh agus iad a choimeád slán ó chontúirt. Tá sé beagnach dodhéanta bealach amach a fheiceáil, gan ollathrú ar an tsochaí, athrú ina mbeadh ní ba mhó meas curtha ar an tsaol ná ar an bhrabús agus cuirfí cosc ar fhoréigean in áit freagra. Dúirt an scoláire ar son cealú príosúnachta, Ruth Wilson Gilmore, gur “bagairt seachas freagairt” atá sa choireacht. But our institutions, especially in the North, have never been fit for purpose. They lag behind political evolution and continue to perpetrate the same systemic bias that led us here in the first place. From disrespect to disregard, victims are no closer to retributive justice than they are to a restorative one. Everything feels distant, and disconnected from the reality on the ground: the failure to care and the failure to protect. It is near impossible to consider a way out without drastic societal change, one in which life would be valued more than profit and violence would be prevented rather than reacted to. Abolitionist scholar Ruth Wilson Gilmore defined crime as “a threat versus a reaction”. Seans nach bhfuil ach córas ceartais amháin againn agus is é sin muidne ar fad. Mar a dúirt sí, is é cuspóir cealú na príosúnachta ná “an chaoi a mbíonn muid ag idirghníomhú le chéile agus leis an phláinéad a athrú trí thús áite a thabhairt do dhaoine ar bhrabús, do leas sóisialach ar chogaíocht, don tsaol ar an bhás.”

Is beag meas atá ar an tsaol sna Sé Chontae. Tá an fhíric sin glacadh chugainn againn féin mar dhaoine coilínithe cleachta le maireachtáil lom, in áit dea-bheatha a chaitheamh. Tá muid cleachta le rud ar a dtugtar “leibhéal inghlactha foréigin” – agus in áit foréigean seicteach tá foréigean in aghaidh na mban, agus iadsan is mó a íocann as coimhlint agus a hiarmhairtí.

Perhaps the only form of justice we have is all of us. As she put it, the goal of abolition is to “change how we interact with each other and the planet by putting people before profits, welfare before warfare, and life over death.”

Life is very cheap in the north of Ireland. We have internalised that fact as colonised people trained to survive and not to live. We have accustomed ourselves to what has been called an “acceptable level of violence”, which necessarily displaces itself from sectarian division to women, who often bear the brunt of conflict and its aftermath.

Agus mé ag scríobh, tá tríocha bean maraithe sna Sé Chontae ó bhí 2020 ann. Nochtann an staitistic uafásach seo a lán teipeanna córasacha sa tsochaí seo againn, go háirithe go gcaithfidh muid aire a thabhairt dóibh siúd atá ag iompar ualach na coimhlinte agus a ngortaíonn agus a maraíonn a bpáirtí iad fós. Tá an córas dlí coiriúil ag titim as a chéile agus níor dearadh é le tacaíocht a thabhairt do na daoine is imeallaithe ach le bac a chur ar dhúshlán ar bith don status quo, beag beann ar an dochar comhthaobhach. Le linn eipidéim fhoréigin in aghaidh na mban, an bhfuil an stát ábalta agus toilteanach bearta coisctheacha a dhéanamh? At the time of writing, 30 women have now been killed in the North of Ireland since 2020. This staggering statistic exposes many systemic failures within our society, namely to protect those who have burnt the weight of the conflict and continue to be injured and die at the hands of their partners. The criminal justice system is crumbling, never truly meant to support the most marginalised but to prevent any challenge to the status quo, regardless of the collateral damage. In an epidemic of gender-based violence, is the state willing and able to prevent? Dar le go leor daoine, teipeann ar an tiomantas do chineál difriúil córa nuair a bhíonn coir thromchúiseach i gceist. Tá muid in ann todhchaí a fheiceáil, nach ngearrtar pionós as gadaíocht nó imirce. Is féidir dul i ngleic le coireacht, mar thógán de chuid an duine, i sochaí ina bhfuil a chuid príomhchúiseanna sochpholaitiúil: bochtaineacht, andúil, fadhbanna meabhairshláinte, tá réiteach ag achan duine. Nuair a bhíonn coir thromchúiseach i gceist, mar shampla ionsaí gnéasach, foréigean baile, fiú banmharú, is doiligh an spreag a dhiúltaigh chun pionós a chur ar dhéantóirí coire agus iad a chur i bpríosún. Tá muid i dtaithí ar cheartas cúiteach agus go bhfuil ár gcuid institiúidí ann leis an cheart sin a chosaint. For many, their commitment to a different kind of justice hits a wall when it comes to serious crime. We are capable of envisioning a future in which theft, or migration, would no longer be considered deserving of punishment. Crime, as a social construct, can be dealt with in a society where most of its root causes are socio-political: poverty, addiction, mental health – everyone has a solution. When it comes to serious crime, such as sexual offences and domestic violence, even femicide, the impetus to look toward punishment and incarceration is hard to resist. It is embedded within us that justice is retributive, and that our institutions exist to protect that right.

Authors, remember that you CAN insist on human translation for your foreign-language editions and have it written into your contracts. You can no longer just assume you're going to get a human to work on the book whose every word you wrote with intent.
