And we wondered why CMU needed the humanities to be “more synergistic” rather than “antagonistic” with the mission of the university. It won’t save ya’ll.

Threw some Baudrillard at the kids yesterday and they ate it up. One reason I teach theory is that I’ve seen how it can grant students the permission and vocabulary to be smart, and to view their own lives as objects worthy of smart analysis, in ways way pure “skills”-based education cannot.

The conflation of AI-critical with technophobic is tactical & infuriating. While accusing us of just knee-jerk hating tech, they’re enshittifying search engines, degrading digital archives, sundowning or enclosing popular tools, etc. We were all happily using that tech!

The fact also that the product in question seems to produce a dangerous dependence that leaves students lacking confidence in their own minds and abilities is enough for us not to be testing it; but the fact that the tech is driving some vulnerable young people to suicide is even more alarming.

"Creating the third-largest university plant collection" may seem celebratory, but remember: this is happening because Duke administration decided to axe the herbarium as a cost-cutting measure. Natural history collections are a precious scientific resource, and too many are at risk of being lost.
