That's an unrelated project by the same name. It seems like Gander used to have some code on Github, but it's been unpublished. I can't find any source code anywhere else. Their FAQ states: "Our goal is for both Gander and Wingspan to be open source, and we’ll release code over time as it’s ready."

@gandersocial.ca have been publicly quiet on this topic, but I just came across an interesting and positive reply to a question by their founder:

Question by a Gander user:
"Since Gander is connected to Bluesky, right? Is there a way to consolidate your Bluesky and Gander account?"

Answer by Ben Waldman, founder of Gander:
"That is the idea!

Gander operates on the same protocol. We’ve added some of our goodies, but kept the base so users can (soon) choose just how broad their experience goes, and ultimately connect with folks all over the world.

In fact we’re working with Eurosky on some stuff right now. Mostly information sharing, but we love those guys.

Soon enough we’ll have full interoperability, with the idea being you’ll be able to migrate over to Gander and keep your following, content, etc. and do an account merge (we’re all biting our nails over that one).

From there, it will get a little interesting. Like venturing out into uncharted waters. Since we can’t moderate the whole ATmoshphere firehose, we’ll rely on Bluesky labelers, while moderating content coming from Gander.

We suspect it will be a bit of an evolution. We learned in week 1 of beta that the raw firehose is… spicy."

Interestingly you can log into `live.wsocial.eu` with any Atmosphere account (👏) and it is more explicit about verification: it confirms that both W verified users and Bluesky blue-checks are allowed to comment.

On the other hand, this part is concerning. @iame.li can you confirm if only W users will be able to comment on the State of the EU broadcast? I also note that on stream.place/wsocial.eu it says wsocial is offline, whereas on live.wsocial.eu it shows them live…

Hmm, EU-Haul seemed to be working until the last step where it complains that I haven't completed a CAPTCHA that doesn't seem to exist. @renderg.host any ideas? (Yes I entered the verification code from the email, not included in this screenshot.)

I didn't use OAuth at any point, I only logged in with username and password. They ask you to set a password on step 1 of the signup flow. This is before any mention of W ID or anything; I don't *think* there would be a way to skip it.

I wanted to test changing my handle to my own domain. W have removed this option from their Bsky clone. By logging in with bsky.app I was able to change to my own domain with no issues.

The account was created but W would not let me use the app without verifying my age as it is "required by law in my region". In fact the app is logged in in the background, this screen is a modal on top of it.

I created a brand new test account and opted not to verify. For what it's worth, on the intro flow W does sort-of advertise the fact that they are part of the Atmosphere, though in a way that non-technical users probably won't understand.

Oh and FWIW their FAQ lies and says they do interoperate with other ATProto apps:

They've also removed the ability to set your handle to your own domain from their Bsky app fork. Presumably they'll only allow that for high profile accounts like the EU Commission.

It certainly needs some thoughtful UX. But it's a challenge worth dealing with instead of ignoring. Personally I feel this (see image) hits the sweet spot, but of course everything can always be improved upon.

Despite the positive headline, this is a very depressing article. Global fossil fuel usage is growing as fast as ever, with no sign of slowing down, and the same applies to global CO2 emissions. Almost all of that growth is coming from China.
