this is from a soldier's letter home from the civil war but I can't find the post with the book-source anymore

The Rutland Herald (Vt-R, July 1862) quoted a local soldier's letter in which righteousness rationalizes extreme violence: "We can never end this war/// till we make common cause with the negro, arm him, ...and by a combination of terror and extermination, destroy the race of slaveholders on this continent. I know this will be a terrible course — bloody and horrible. But by what sort of cataclysm can anyone expect the two hundred years of torture and wrong... to be closed? ...I look to see those fair Southern homes... sink amid blood and fire. ...To the hands of the North have been committed the sword and flame of avenging justice. With knife and cautery must we pursue this cancer to all its ramifications, unmindful of the writhing and groans of the victim. Our National Life and the hopes of the ages are tied to the thoroughness of our work."

In this new Gilded Age we have posters instead of cartoonists, which just don't have the same impact. Back in the day Thomas Nast could publish some fucked up allegorical depiction of a politician in the papers and sink their whole administration.

Different creature types have different Instinctual Actions that they might take if overwhelmed or low morale.
