All that to say, be the kind of person who doesn’t yell at a sick dog. Be the kind of person a sick dog can crawl into the lap of, and your friends won’t hide their illness from you. That’s how you build a loving community.

You may even get upset AT a dog for throwing up on a rug or bed linen. And I’ve done a lot of work on myself, to open up and stop throwing up behind the couch. But I also got punished for being sick. I got punished pretty hard. And I’m having to learn new people won’t do that, too.

I think it’s easy to say “tell us you’re unwell!” But my dog can feel a seizure coming. When she does, she crawls into my lap because she /knows she’ll be safe there/ And how do dogs get treated when they throw up? People get upset and the dog can’t understand that it’s not their fault.

They insist that we all need to work on being better at not “throwing up behind the couch” so that the people around us can step in and DO something. In the metaphor, get us medicine and water. But this applies broadly to life, in general. And I thought about this because my dog doesn’t do this.

My dog had a seizure. Now, she’s fine, but it made me think: You see, there’s a sort of story that goes around the internet about how dogs get sick and try to hide their symptoms - this is phrased as “throwing up behind the couch” And the writer argues humans can be guilty of this, too
