This is spot on. I was in court for the settlement negotiations. It was explicit in comments from both sets of lawyers that the the suppression of evidence due to be heard in the trial was an absolutely essential requirement for the Murdoch side.

British tabloids illegally intercepted John Prescott's communications, smeared and ridiculed him. Why? Because he was left-wing, because his politics threatened the power-grabbing greed of tabloid owners. He stood for the best of the Labour movement and suffered from the worst of UK journalism.
