The fans of two breweries' ales in my story setting have such an intense rivalry over whose ale is the best, that taverns and inns are pressured to declare exclusively for one or the other, to avoid the inevitable brawls that erupt over the issue. The '80s cola wars were skirmishes compared to this.

Many regions of my story world are still in a direct barter economy. There's a powerful trading company that offers them goods-backed paper scrip as currency, which is convenient, but not universally accepted, as many see it as foreign economic interference. Other regions use precious metal coins.
