New in JASMS: we introduce CLOCK, a framework that independently tunes how hard and how long you activate gas-phase protein ions, from sub-millisecond to seconds. CLOCK maps instrument settings onto effective temperatures ranging from ~350–600 K. doi.org/10.1021/jasm...

Over the holidays, we relocated our mass spectrometers to Bagley Hall in preparation for the construction of a new Chemical Sciences Building. Many thanks to graduate students Addison Roush and Chris Weir for all of their contributions over the last two weeks!

Does anyone in the USA have a crate for a Waters Cyclic or Waters Synapt XS that they are willing to give or lend to me?

Concur! Parquet is great. We've been impressed using Parquet for other projects, including integrating results from many ion mobility experiments, where we need to track and index lots of metadata, and logging ion trajectory simulations, where we need compression, read speed, and durability.

Excited to share a new paper! SLIMPHONY uses eight independently controlled traveling-wave regions that work in concert to select and activate ions in multiple regions, to vary the number of dimensions of ion mobility, and to control the length of ion mobility separations. doi.org/10.1021/jasm...

Great perspective on starting and sustaining a career at a primarily undergraduate institution (PUI) with research using instrumentation. Thanks for writing this, @jaygforsythe.bsky.social

i wrote an essay for @thetransmitter.bsky.social about what it feels like to serve on an NIH grant review panel (study section) right now www.thetransmitter.org/craft-and-ca...

Fear and loathing on study section: Reviewing grant proposals while the system is burning
As grants are canceled, delayed and subject to general uncertainty, participating in study sections can feel futile. But it’s more important than ever.

The "reproducibility crisis" in science constantly makes headlines. Repro efforts are often limited. What if you could assess reproducibility of an entire field? That's what @brunolemaitre.bsky.social et al. have done. Fly immunity is highly replicable & offers lessons for #metascience A 🧵 1/n

Breaks my heart. I have also benefited greatly from the NSF MRI program — it is, without question, the best way for PUI chemists like me to get new instruments. Our schools can’t afford big startup or retention packages.

The times we live in. The National Institute of Justice has taken down their webpages describing radiocarbon dating, which describes the use of carbon dating in forensics. I planned to link to in my Instrumental Analysis class.

NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds. This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.
