Today was a perfect day for being outside. Catching that praying mantis was the perfect excuse to take the kiddos to the wetlands to catch its dinner and check up on some plant lifecycles we've been watching all year. Gregory now has a temporary habitat til we can get her something more suitable.

Found a heavily pregnant non-native mantis outside on the way to get the kiddos. When I told them we couldn't let her go they decided they want to keep her. They have named her Gregory. She is settling in nicely. I am so excited the kids are excited about this.

Oh boy, Trump is blaming what is happening in France with the youth protests on Islam instead of the failing school system. This is being said as his administration and multiple red states around the country are bleeding public school systems dry. As usual, this does not bode well.

I just think it's important to remind people that while it is popping up in people's feeds that it's not just some dangerous remote place. The larger Congo river basin is literally one of the most biodiverse and ecologically important areas on earth with some of the coolest wetlands we have left.

The Congo basin is also one of the most biodiverse regions on the entire planet as well. Roughly 20% of all known living species on the planet call the Congo basin home. In 2007 a new monkey was discovered, prompting further interest. news.mongabay.com/2012/09/rema...
“There are monkeys out there between the three rivers that no one recognizes. They are not in our field guides,” Terese Hart wrote tantalizingly in a blog post in 2008. “We’ve sent photos to the most renown of African Primatologists. Result: a lot of raised eyebrows. And the more we find out the higher our eyebrows go.”

One of these monkeys was the lesula (Cercopithecus lomamiensis). John Hart first came across the new species in June 2007 when he and a field team were shown a captive baby lesula, kept as a pet by the local school director’s daughter in the remote village of Opala. The next step was locating the species in the wild.Photo of lesula monkey that's known for its human-like face only discovered in 2007

We're still very much learning about the Congo river basin and how it is one of the most ecologically significant regions on our planet. It has the deepest river in the world. It's ancient and has carved out deep and wide gorges. Its extreme currents even act as ecological barriers in some parts.

The Congo basin hasn't yet had the same amount of clear cutting, but ppl living there are experiencing increased flooding as a result of climate change and are having to adapt. We need to take care of the 150+ ethnic groups that live there and help take care of it. news.yale.edu/2026/08/25/s...
“Surprisingly, however, local people across the reserve attested that village flooding was a recent phenomenon,” Meier said. “Before the year 2000 or so, people claimed that floods severe enough to permeate village boundaries might occur only once a decade.”

I've been seeing a lot of chatter about the Congo river because there is a guy about to kayak down it. I'm just here to remind you that wetlands are important and the forested wetlands of the Congo basin are some of our most important wetlands. The basin is our planet's single functioning lung 🫁

A FOIA request showed Medina County Sheriff's Office in OH using flock to search for anyone "who stopped near, stood in front of, or deliberately looked at a flock camera instead of walking past it". These cameras are often at intersections where ppl stop. unitingnow.substack.com/p/records-sh...
The exact prompt given to flock system obtained via FOIA that reads "Find any person on May 29 who stopped near, stood in front of, or deliberately looked at a Flock LPR camera instead of simply walking past it," while prioritizing "anyone associated with a small pickup truck, possibly a Dodge Dakota who may have been scouting locations before 10:05pm"

This both amazes me and fills me with horror. It's wild humans are so smart we can do things like this but it's also wild that we're so short-sighted and self-centered that we got ourselves to a point where we engineer things like *checks notes* 3d printed cookies made from upcylced plastics.

They want autonomous murder machines. We all knew this was coming. It wasn't just how they have been treating soldiers, there have been so many big bright flashing signs. bsky.app/profile/bumb...
"The Pentagon has announced a new four-star military command dedicated to the rapid adoption of killer robots and other autonomous weapons. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made the announcement during his “State of the Force” address on Wednesday at the Quantico Marine base in Virginia.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth: “Today, at my direction, we are announcing the creation of Autonomous Warfare Command, or AutoWarCom, a new four-star combatant command with service-like authorities built to scale autonomous and robotic capabilities across the joint force in the fastest peacetime shift in modern military history. Drone warfare supercharged by SI-enabled targeting is the biggest battlefield revolution in generations.”"

Speaking of Ohio, less than a month prior to Rokita announcing that Indiana will be taking federal funds to increase the use of 287g's task force model Markwayne Mullin visited Ohio where during a roundtable w/local LEOs he said "ICE would LOVE to be a transport agency...that would be ideal for us."
101
Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Not only was the task force model for the 287g program previously done away with for exactly that reason in 2012, but it was also done away with in Gratis, Ohio just this year after a police chief went to multiple schools in Cincinnati claiming to be conducting "wellness checks" on behalf of ICE.
Screenshot from article that reads "It's the same program that several jurisdictions in Ohio are part of. The city of Gratis suspended its 287(g) agreement after its police chief visited multiple Cincinnati Public Schools earlier this year, saying she was conducting wellness checks on behalf of ICE.

The chief later resigned."

Rokita was explicit that he wants every sheriff's dept across the state to participate in the task force model and that this is part of a nationwide effort to push police to take on ICE's duties in our communities. He claims that it won't take away from their "ability to keep the community safe".
Screenshot from article in original post that reads "By the way, every county sheriff across the state should be—and can be—doing what we’re doing. And what sheriffs across the nation are doing," his statement continues.

Rokita says that the agreement does not take away from local law enforcement, only adds "to their ability to keep the community safe."

Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Rokita knows exactly what he is doing. Quietly shifting ICE's duties to local LEOs is intentional. Just last month he knowingly recorded a video to be aired at a mass deportation rally held by Save Heritage Indiana where Greg Bovino was the key speaker in support of their cause.
Screenshot of Twitter post from Save Heritage Indiana that shows a picture of Todd Rokita with text that reads "BREAKING: Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita will be delivering recorded remarks at our rally for mass deportations, the first in the nation.

Thank you for your leadership in all things @AGToddRokita, especially all you've done to fight against mass immigration."

The FAIRNESS Act has nothing to do with fairness, it stands for "Fostering and Advancing Immigration Reforms Necessary to Ensure Safety and Security". It further criminalized hiring immigrants without a work permit (even legal ones) & pushes work surveillance. www.faegredrinker.com/en/insights/...
Screenshot from source reading "FAIRNESS Act — short for Fostering and Advancing Immigration Reforms Necessary to Ensure Safety and Security — establishes significant new requirements for Indiana employers, governmental bodies, and universities relating to federal immigration law enforcement. The Act: (1) prohibits governmental bodies and postsecondary educational institutions from limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities, and (2) creates a new state-law cause of action against employers who knowingly or intentionally recruit, hire, or continue to employ unauthorized immigrants.

The law directly targets private employers and strongly incentivizes companies to enroll in E-Verify under threat of new state-level penalties, which compound with existing federal penalties for violation of verification obligations."
100
Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
It's not just me saying that, Rokita said it himself: “Partnering with federal law enforcement is a key part of how we deport illegal aliens under the FAIRNESS Act, which we helped write and support".
"“Partnering with federal law enforcement is a key part of how we deport illegal aliens under the FAIRNESS Act, which we helped write and support," Rokita said in a statement announcing the partnership. "A 287(g) agreement with ICE does exactly that—giving our investigators greater ability to work side by side with them and take stronger action to protect Hoosiers."
100
Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
This announcement is part of a nationwide push to get local law enforcement departments to join the 287g program under the the task force model or switch to it from the jail model by making federal funds available.
Text from article that reads "The 287(g) program, funded by federal tax dollars, allows local law enforcement agencies to create task forces in partnership with ICE to enforce immigration laws."
101
Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Instead of the "jail model" of the 287g program where law enforcement hold people for ICE they have picked up for other reasons they are pushing the "task force model" where local law enforcement essentially become ICE. www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/fact-sheet/2...
Text from cited source that reads "Under the jail enforcement model (JEM), deputized officers may interrogate suspected noncitizens who have been arrested on state or local charges to determine their immigration status. Deputized officers may issue immigration detainers, which are administrative requests from ICE to law enforcement agencies to hold a non-citizen for up to 48 hours after they would otherwise be released. As of June 30, 2025 ICE had signed 287(g) JEM agreements with 111 law enforcement agencies in 27 states.""In 2025, the Trump administration resurrected the task force model despite its track record of racial profiling and harm. This model allows local law enforcement agents who encounter suspected noncitizens during their daily activities to question and arrest individuals that they believe violated immigration law—in other words, they can enforce immigration law during routine police activity. These deputized local law enforcement agents can issue ICE detainers, arrest warrants, and search warrants, as well as inquire into individuals’ immigration status. Jurisdictions with the task force model are likely to see more local police interrogating immigrants and making arrests of people believed to be non-citizens in American communities as compared to the other models which restrict immigration enforcement by local police to state and local jails."

I walked 165 recorded miles last month, an average of 5.5 miles a day. Fall is so bittersweet. September absolutely flew by but I managed to slip a couple super memorable trips in there. Since October is the last month of decent weather I've got some great hikes planned to make the most of it.

She asked to be hanged to avoid exactly this happening. They denied her request. A lot of ppl were upset about the optics of the state hanging someone, but I was that kid who used to ask myself what method I'd choose if the state were to execute me one day and lethal injection was at the bottom.
Screenshot saying "Why does Christa Pike decline lethal injection as her method of execution?

Her legal representatives and trauma specialists contend that this procedure could compel her to experience the traumatic memories of abuse she endured during her formative years.

Her clemency petition documentation outlines instances of childhood violence, deprivation, and sexual assault, encompassing assaults that occurred at ages 11 and 17. Furthermore, it references her clinical diagnoses of bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Her legal representatives contend that she has small veins and a hematological condition that could complicate intravenous line placement, a position that state authorities challenge.

During May, Tennessee correctional authorities terminated the execution of another inmate, Tony Carruthers, subsequent to their inability to identify an appropriate vein.

According to The New York Post, Pike's legal counsel said that she additionally apprehends the prospect of a painful demise through lethal injection.

The publication reported that she expresses a preference to be executed by gunfire administered by an all-female firing squad, with representatives from Slemmer's family present as observers."

Is the Beast of 'Busco the coolest cryptid? No. It's a giant turtle. Does it have the coolest cryptid story? Again, no, it's just a giant turtle that terrorized some farmers 75 years ago. But is it the most likely to have been real? Yes, and that's why it's my favorite cryptid.

Indiana has lost over 85% of its original wetlands. These wetlands are a vital part of our ecosystem. They are the natural filters of our water and natural habitats to most species that call Indiana home for part or all of their lifecycles. We must protect what is left without compromise.

The last cygnet wasn't far behind and they went off the way we saw them come from earlier in the day. These were the coolest encounters we had, but we saw a ton of other wildlife, too. I don't get up here often, but I am always reminded how important our wetlands are when I do.
110
Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
The ornery cygnets dwaddled getting into the water and following her so she finally straight up HONKED at them. Then after thinking about it for a moment, one of the cygnets decides to practice taking off after their mom. It was super neat to watch. Swans are absolutely huge up close w/wings out.
111
Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Mom had decided it was time to go home. No amount of head bobbing and stamping and calling to her was going to change her mind. So she got in the water and head bobbed at me & my friend and swam off right in between us with her more obedient cygnets in tow, muttering. (Brief cuts are for privacy)
110
Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
After being ignored for quite some time, mama swan decided that if they couldn't listen it was time to go home. She disappeared into the brush to gather the other cygnets and the ones on the other bank finally acknowledged her and tried to get her attention as she walked away, but it was too late.
110
Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
The cygnets across the way were ornery. They saw her and they saw us and they didn't give a FUCK. Here's a full 3 min of them preening while ignoring their mom who is silently losing her cool and increasing the veracity of her head bobs trying to get them to come to her and the others:
110
Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
We stopped to watch and as we drifted around and bend we realized that mama sawn was on the opposite bank with their siblings, not up behind them. We were NOT about to get between them so we sat and watched. She was uncomfortable, but not afraid, and signaled to them to come to her as she preened.
110
Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I was super excited when we were coming back a few hours later and in the last channel on the way back and I noticed two of the cygnets on the bank preening themselves. Just watch their little noodle necks! So stinking cute.
110
Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Earlier in the day we saw them as we headed out on our second leg of our journey after stopping for some food. They were on the other side of the lake as we were watching a heron and we saw her lead her 5 cygnets down the channel we'd just taken toward another lake.
110
Bumblejack @bumblejack.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Then, as we were entering the last channel to go back to the boat house where we started we came upon a family of Trumpeter Swans. This was undeniably the coolest part of the whole trip.

It does not notice me like the painted midland turtle did. This turtle gives no fucks.
