I still say I make small games, but I quickly follow with nothing you'd know! They still ask tho 😅 and I have to say my biggest game sold 5k copies for the playdate, they defo haven't heard of it haha Then they ask what's a playdate, it's a little loop I still enjoy tbh

I've never seen crunch result in better work. Often I've seen the opposite, because management was so poor that it resulted in crunch, the work done during crunch ended up being thrown out because it was planned in an impulsive (badly managed) way it's just really dumb

I have wider reaching ideas for why those funded games don't succeed, but the core point is that the scale of cost to potential loss really does feel like gambling. I don't think every funded game is a gamble though, people just need to stop seeking infinite roi

I think my thesis is that publishers should be backing devs, not games. my original point is that I'm frustrated by how cheap I could make (from my pov) great games, but a lot of single games that don't succeed have many millions in funding. I just think that's wasteful and it annoys me.

and if you did invested that money into multiple indie & AA developers over a long term, you could focus, refine and build I know I have no control over how many pubs / investors seek hyper growth, but I don't think investing in people with proven track records is gambling.

I do feel like we agree on a lot after reading that! I can't talk too much on AAA cause I haven't played one in a long time, but you're right that they're needed. I think my issue ultimately comes down to where that AAA money is going, cause at least a few AAA games were very bad investments

disingenuous stat tbh, you absolutely know that 99% of indie games have little runway (if any), spend half their time trying to get a pub instead of focusing on the game, or are from people just making their first game for fun (which shouldn't really have commercial aims)

to include marketing, lets say you near double it and it costs 500k over a 10 year period for 5 games. By game 5 you would have built a community around a developer, the lack of this is the problem. I just don't see how long term investment in art is gambling, short term investment is.

I think by game 5 the combined rev would exceed the 200k - 300k it took to fund them by a decent margin. I think the issue is less that it's gambling and more that it's focused on short-term gains over long term reliability
