We only just saw this in the nick of time. We try to look after the fungi in the woods as part of looking after the woodland ecosystem.

We’re so lucky to do what we do for a living. Not only do we visit some beautiful places, but we get to play a part in the preservation & enhancement of habitats on them. We were excited about influencing the management of habitats on Field Irish Farm before we found such an interesting fungi there.

Like a lot of people, we did No Mow May. We carried on into Let It Bloom June. We're now right in the middle of The Deer Come By July.

Whorled caraway flowering in our little meadow. The flowers and beautiful and delicate and it represents a level of success in restoring this area of species rich grassland.

Birds-nest orchids don't photosythasise, that take their nutrients by creating a structure like a birds-nest around the roots of a tree and sapping the nutrients from the tree. These are some that we found in a woodland in Devon.

The years that it's taken to restore this area of culm grassland have paid off. Great habitat and looking fabulous!

We suggested to a client that they put up a trailcam to monitor deer activity. They sent us this.

We found this yesterday in a clearing in an ancient woodland that we have the honour of managing. It's greater broomrape. It doesn't photosynthesise and has no roots. It steels sugar and water from the broom it parasitises. It's nationally scarce and we were excited to find it.

Violet Oil Beetles, found on Higher Comfort nature reserve. They like species-rich grassland and woodland edges, which are exactly the habitats we're developing on the nature reserve. They parasitise solitary bees, so are an indicator of a healthy wild bee population.

We love writing woodland management plans. Every woodland is different and so is every woodland owner, so every plan we write is unique. We cover Devon and parts of Somerset, so if you have a woodland in this area, give us a shout and start the conversation.

Thanks to the generosity of three very talented artists, we're able to sell these beautiful cards on our website. All proceeds go towards preserving and enhancing habitats on the Culm Measures and raising awareness of their importance.
5 cards, depicting stonechats, a marsh fritillary butterfly, willow tits, a hare and whitethroats.

1/n An email from DEFRA last night informed us that the government is closing the Sustainable Farming Incentive until 2026. There is no notice. Anyone working on an SFI application can now throw it away. For us, SFI is not a big part of our business. For some this will leave them with no income

We can now help you to get the most out of your small woodland and the government will pay. We specialise in environmental aspects such as habitat creation, but aesthetics are important to us and we've made most of our living from forestry for the last 15 years, so we understand the economics too.

This tree survived the storm, but was weakened and fell over in the winds afterwards, pulling up its root plate. We cut the top off and it stood back up where it grew. Birch doesn't pollarding well, even without root damage. We expect it to die, leaving fantastic habitat as standing deadwood.

Bulworthy Project @bulworthy.bsky.social · 10/12/2024
We've been out checking trees after the storm. It's tempting to tidy up the "damage" and take down trees like this, which are going to die anyway. However, a sheered off tree like this with raggedy edges is valuable habitat and as it dies, it creates even better habitat.

We've been taking guards off trees. The trees have grown into them. We'll reuse as many as we can, but most will probably end up being incinerated. We've got 2 sacks of cable ties. Tree planting is an important part of restoring biodiversity and sequestering carbon. We need to address this issue.
