This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Chirin's Bell Tolls My piece for @furryfootage.bsky.social zine from last year #Chirinsbell | #ringingbell | #art007

A small happy young white sheep version of Chirin plays in a field. The older dark grey version of Chirin with horns and blood splatter stands on cliffs above looking down. The piece is framed by medieval style borders that depict sheep running from a wolf, wolf skulls, flowers, a bird's nest, a wolf running from a horned sheep, and wolf skeletons

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

I guess everyone's doing the 9 games thing. Decided to list the ones that were the biggest influences on me. Honorable mentions: Okami, Pokemon Blue, Nine Sols, Kirby Return to Dreamland Deluxe and Forgotten Land, Fossil Fighters Champions. It's genuinely really hard to narrow down the top 9.

Top to bottom, left to right:
TBOI Rebirth, Afterbirth +, Repentance
Cult of the Lamb, Woolhaven
Blasphemous and its sequel
Mischief Makers (Yuke-yuke Trouble Makers)
Kirby Triple Deluxe (Kirby overall, but TDX especially)
Bugsnax
Pokemon Crystal
PMD Sky
Legends Arceus

Here's the main points from the site page. This is how Discord is going to implement it. While it sucks they're doing this, they're pretty much covering their asses to get any governments off their backs. The blame should still be put on those stupid ID laws.

TLDR

•More than 90% of you won’t be asked to confirm your age. Since our last post about teen safety, we've had to launch age assurance solutions in more places, including Texas and Brazil. Laws requiring age assurance are expanding around the world. Rather than waiting to be told how to do it, we’re launching our own privacy-preserving approach: one that reflects your feedback.

•You can check your age group status at User Settings > Account Status. We've estimated your age group automatically from account signals like how long your account has existed or the kinds of servers you're a part of. We don’t look at your messages, calls, or other content. We're launching this over the course of this week, so it may take a few days to reach your account.

•If you're in the adult age group (18+), nothing changes. If you're in the teen age group (13-17), you can keep messaging friends, joining voice calls, and participating in non-age-restricted servers, but with additional safety protections that block age-restricted content, spaces, and settings. Otherwise, Discord works the same. More on this below.

•We've added several new ways to confirm your age, including some that don't require an ID or selfie (including credit cards). If you're an adult but weren't automatically placed in the adult age group, you can confirm your age group at any time by going to User Settings > Account Status. More on the new options below.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

Digital painting. top half of the composition is blue sky peaking through yellowed pinyons and cottonwood, scrub oaks along the ground. Beyond the scrub oaks are dried grasses that lead us to two anthropomorphic animals in front of a small black offroad Suzuki Samurai with the hood popped up. A bespectacled African Wild Dog in a full khaki getup, dark fur, light fur, and yellow fur poking out from under the edges of the top, and a thin white scarf barely visible around the nape. The whole outfit is one khaki colour, save for his grey socks under his brown slides. He bends towards a toolbox on the ground. On the Samurai's bumper stands a canned cocktail from a local brewery in the Tiwa Lands, so-called Albuquerque. The driver's side door is wide open with the window down.
