I did suggest axe throwing, but it was collectively decided that the team's hand eye coordination skills would overall be more suited to retro games than axes! 🪓🕹️

Team outings. Library digital services (my team) went to the National Videogame Museum. The Senior leadership team went to Chatsworth, and I think the Archives team went for after tea!

Regina George may be a Mean Girl, but even she knows the truth: data need documentation to be reusable. This #MemeMonday we celebrate the importance of readmes, codebooks, methodologies, metadata -- whatever you call it, it's essential for reusing data of all types.
Meme of a still from Mean Girls. A blonde white woman, Regina George, smiles. The photo has superimposed text which reads: "So you agree? You think all data should have robust documentation to enable reuse?"

I'll never understand how "a lot of mostly/potentially/probably incorrect metadata is better for digital discovery than accurate but sparse metadata" became a popular idea than "we will put things online more slowly, but we will do it with accuracy"

Well that’s a hot pro-glove use with books take
It's interesting that my entire life they said wear gloves to protect from deteriorating the delicate pages. Oils on our hands and fingertips increase the rate at which old paper deteriorates. And now we have a world wide government focused on rewriting history and they've magically changed the rule. Now they want you to use your hands when handling old manuscripts and rare books.
And they've told you it's good for the books.
Almost as if they want the knowledge in those books to naturally disappear. Just something to think about. I've got a couple of old books myself.
And I plan to continue using soft cloth gloves and thin tongs with soft cloth on the tips to handle my rare books. But hey, that's just me. I like to do research and make decisions based on that rather than listen to what everyone else says. As the old saying goes, if everyone is jumping off a bridge, will you jump too?

Their bios are on the site. Their bios also suggest they collaborate with institutions... So maybe it's just awkward phrasing and use of inaccurate stereotypes on their webpages that I find "funny"?!

Bryony Hooper @bryonyhooper.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
(2 of 2)...But there will still be people (users) who want more support than there is now. Hence why I don't think it's a bad idea persay, just odd that they kind of insult archives/archivists and don't try and work with them instead.

I put an asterix on effort, as there has been a lot of work for decades to provide users with aggregated catalogues (Discovery, archives hub, etc), plus TNA guidance for finding researchers...(1 of 2)

Bryony Hooper @bryonyhooper.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
There's probably an alright business model here somewhere (i.e. partner up with institutions/freelance researchers and offer a combined service that takes some of the effort* of searching/researching out of the users hands), but I suppose the effort/profit margin may not be as desired.

B. As far as I can see it also does not utilise any in-house research services done by staff familiar with the collections. Many institutions have paid-for services, which helps to generate some money for the service. No shade to freelance researchers (the site shades them saying they are costly).

The NRA archive listserv has an advert for a research service. That's fine (if there is a need, someone will monetise delivering it). I just find the company a bit "funny" as it A. Insults the archive services its business model relies on (archives don't respond to enquiries apparently)

Somewhat depressing that although the British Library is one of the headline cases, the article (and seemingly the report behind it) then pivots to talking solely about Galleries and Museums, ignoring Libraries. And Archives aren’t even mentioned. Don’t forget the L and A in GLAM!

If you cannot extract the data (evidence/records/information) from the software, then yes? If the aim is to preserve how the data was served to users, then yes also. This is where emulation comes into play
