#ipres2026 Sybil Schaefer keynote, DP in an uncertain future. Comments that the conference speaks to business as usual planning, but what future are we planning for? When nine planetary boundaries, seven have been exceeded. We are not in a safe operating space.

Our Communications team is at #iPRES2026 this week. So this #MemeMonday we're here to remind you that the real villain is inaccessible file formats. Even if you need specialty or proprietary file formats for your analysis, consider saving a final copy of your data in an open format.
Two meme Scooby Doo panel. The top panel has a masked villain labeled "Trying to rescue federal data" and the character Fred labeled "DRP." The bottom panel has the unmasked villain, labeled "inaccessible files and formats" and Fred is still labeled "DRP."

It's a grim question and one that, obviously, pales into insignificance beside the human cost if this happens, but: what happens to a university's institutional repository when the institution fails/goes bankrupt/closes? Has any university taken digital preservation precautions?
