MAGA's plummeting approval is creating historic opening, and we CANNOT let go to waste like in 2008. I wrote about what it all means (with great graph from a @bryanbennett.bsky.social post) www.powermapmag.com/p/if-we-had-...
Graph: Trust in Federal Government Never Recovered After 2008 and Continued Deteriorating Further. A line showing approval falls below 20% after 2008 and never recovers.

This wasted opportunity is such a historical failure because is hard to imagine a better opening for serious transformational change than post-2008. ….until now that is. Today’s AI bubble is easily comparable to the subprime mortgage bubble of the past. As Cory Doctorow puts it, 35% of the S&P is made up of the “Magnificent Seven” AI companies, six of them lose money on AI, and the seventh, Nvidia, mainly sells hardware to the other six. This is not a recipe for economic stability, and we should certainly be ready for the possibility of a collapse that could echo 2008.

Midterm polling this year looks different from past "blue wave" elections in one very specific way: Democrats are outperforming their relative brand advantage over Republicans. My latest newsletter walks through this and what it may or may not mean. bryannbennett.substack.com/p/how-these-...

How This Year’s Midterm Polling is Different From Past “Blue Wave” Elections in One Very Specific Way
The relationship between the generic ballot and ratings of the political parties is behaving a little differently in 2026 than any midterm election cycle dating back to 2006.

The first 9 plays of Iowa’s two minute offense were like Homer thinking he could skateboard across the Springfield Gorge and falling into the gorge, the final 2 plays were like the bus in Speed successfully jumping the gap in the freeway

One way to tell that Texas has vastly improved from last year in spite of the horrible horrible mistakes at the end is being in a competitive road game and winning against a ranked Tennessee rather than winning competitive road games requiring comebacks against Mississippi State and Kentucky

Comparing now to this point before the 2022 midterms in CNN / SSRS data, 66% say Trump worsened economic conditions; 50% said that of Biden. People of color, those under 45, college grads, women, and independents are much more negative on Trump than Biden. datawrapper.dwcdn.net/jye68/1/

All the exciting Democratic Senate candidates on the precipice of victory in 6 weeks might be voted out of office in 6 years. Democrats must focus on addressing the deterioration of trust in government, or another night like 2016 and 2024 could happen. bryannbennett.substack.com/p/democrats-...

Democrats Need to Confront the Length and Depth of Distrust in Government and Institutions
Trust in government has been at or near historic lows for nearly 20 years. Accepting this as a default characteristic of our politics is unsustainable and needs attention—desperately.

Why I’m Not Celebrating About the Size of the Democratic Advantage in Today’s NYT/Siena Survey

Not too be too reductive about this, but it’s pretty annoying that most public discourse I’ve seen about whether AI will kill all humanity is less informative than just watching Terminator 2 or The Matrix, or even WarGames (to be clear, all 3 slap and I’d rather just watch them)

One wonders how large a lead Democrats could have if they didn’t have as many issues with their brand/perceived performance. In the same survey (!), Dems in Congress have a 20% approval rating. Independents are equally negative toward both parties but D+20 on who they want to win

More fun stuff from the paper collection (if your idea of fun has been twisted by too many years of looking at polls) I’ve never seen a post debate poll that broke down results by hours. Different types of respondents, or narrative taking hold?
Ford vs Carter debate - question about who won, broken down by time chunks from immediately following until end of the next day. In the first segment, the split is 44/33 in Ford’s favor, but by the next evening, it’s 62/17 in favor of Carter.

They chose “run up the score” and the other 49 states not Alabama celebrate with glee so I guess that’s the most disrespectful option

Bryan Bennett @bryanbennett.bsky.social · 01/01/2026
Serious question: what is the more disrespectful thing Indiana can do to Alabama at this point: run up the score or bench all the starters with close to an entire quarter left? Bigger margin seems worse, but saying “we only need 3 quarters with our starters and let them rest” is also devastating

The things that needed to happen (BYU loses, Alabama loses big) have happened. If Ohio State beats Indiana (especially if by 8+) the debate for the final spot should* be between Texas and ND (and Texas has a pretty strong case to jump ND if they’re being compared H2H). *-should ≠ actually will be

Miami-Notre Dame shouldn’t even be a debate if Alabama loses. Miami should be in. The debate should be between ND, a team that plays a watered down (5-1 in 6 games) ACC schedule and has 0 wins against a CFP team, and Texas, which was 6-2 in a full SEC schedule and was 2-2 in games against CFP teams.
