Thanks. That’s a little frustrating. It would be nice to have one source of records without having to flip between the two and piece things together. Especially when the climate normals update in a few years and neither station has most of the 30 year normal period anymore.

@climatologist49.bsky.social Who would be able to thread in the CRN data to the Annette Island Airport climate thread on xmACIS? It’s only ~0.6 miles away from the old PANT site, and it would be great to be able to have the temp/precipitation data go beyond September 2019.

Also, yes southeast Alaska does occasionally see thunderstorms!

I would say the wind advisory overnight verified. The 71 mph was up on the dam, at approximately 865ft ASL.

Breezy evening here! Strong winds continue for the next several hours before gradually tapering off.

A beautiful evening for a hike up Yellow Hill to see the sunset. Also, a photo of the caterpillar form of the Spotted Tussock Moth.

When I went through boot camp you couldn’t get away from the water. Hydrate or die, and if you didn’t drink or just took a sip they made you drink extra. Not drinking in the heat is extremely stupid.

We lived between Stanton and Slade. Went out with the SAR team a couple times, pretty great group!

Got the CRN gauge emptied just in time for tonight’s heavy rainfall so it doesn’t miss recording any of it! We’ve already picked up more rain today than we had in the entire month up to this point!

Watching the marine layer fog moving around this afternoon.

Bruno @brunota2003.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
A little fog action this morning. The main marine layer was moving from right to left, but these lower clouds moved left to right. You can see a darker area on the surface of the water as they track into the bay.

Dry in SEAK for September wouldn’t be great. I’ve only had 0.07” of precipitation so far this month.

Wow…hope my weather station doesn’t get damaged! And hope peoples’ vehicles and houses do okay. 80 mph and baseball size hail doesn’t happen very often there!

Here are windroses from the Metlakatla AWOS, the station at AIPCo., and station at the WSO by the Annette Island Airport. These cover January 1, 2025 to August 3, 2026 using the reported sustained wind in knots and direction. It is interesting to see the lack of SW and NW winds at the AIPCo station.
The bottom of the image shows the station at the WSO by the Annette Island Airport. The upper two stations are the Metlakatla AWOS and the station at AIPCo.The left station is the Metlakatla AWOS and the right station is AIPCo. Notice the lack of SW and NW winds at the AIPCo station, compared to the AWOS.

Windroses created from some of my weather stations here on Annette Island, covering the period of January 7, 2025 - January 7, 2026. These are using the reported gust speed (mph) and direction to create 16-point roses.

I remember when I was growing up reading event reports from my local NWS office for any severe, flood, winter, or tropical event that were pretty detailed. I miss those, they usually had a lot of good information in them.

July 7, 2019…a very rare day in Cold Bay, AK where the high temperature reached or exceeded 70F. Since 1950 there have only been 37 days where the temperature reached or exceeded 70F. 4 of those days are from 2019. The all-time record high for Cold Bay is 77F, set in 1960.
Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) screen showing the current weather data at the time of the photo on July 7, 2019. The local time was 4:09 pm, or 0109 UTC/Zulu, and the current temperature was 72F or 22.2C.

Freezing low temps out in Cold Bay 🥶 Meanwhile on July 5 and July 7 back in 2019 it was in the low 70s for highs!

Forestry has been working hard this week to clear out the trees around the old WWII observation post my weather station is on top of. Look at the view those on duty would have had back then!

Dislike. I need to get to one of my stations to replace the anemometer (wind direction failed) and it’s been too rainy to do that.

All 3 of the stations I maintain in Central Virginia broke 100F today, with one of them reaching 105F! 🔥 Meanwhile here we were in the low 50s with light rain all day 🥶 @traviskoshko.bsky.social

One of the 3 stations I have set up in Virginia. It has been up and running since November 2019, and it has a new all-time record high. This all-time record high will likely only survive 1 day, as tomorrow looks to be slightly warmer! 🔥 @traviskoshko.bsky.social

That would be my assumption, as well. Though it would be cool to have statewide coverage on their map!

Looking at their station map…no wonder, they only have the one in Sitka. Someone should tell them to look at installing instruments at the Annette Island, Yakutat, King Salmon, Cold Bay, Kodiak, and Saint Paul Island WSOs.

What is Alaska’s largest in diameter hailstone record? Looking through the storm events database, I see a couple of mentions of unofficial reports of golf ball sized hail (1.75”), but it looks like maybe the “official” largest is roughly 1.50”? @climatologist49.bsky.social @alaskawx.bsky.social
