Night. The House of Chimes - a tower which you might immediately think of as Big Ben - is adrift in the River Thames. It still seems to be keeping time. In the background, a large, alien building looms over the city of London.

It would be as simple as tasking agents with filtering some corpus of user data for relevant keywords and then including this data in what an agent tasked with "solving" related problems has access to.

The pressure to generate these kinds of results, internally at Anthropic, must be immense. This is a cult-like organization that does not think people outside the outgroup are real people. Outright fraud isn't off the table!

Bruno Dias @brunodias.dev · 28/09/2026
There's a large spectrum of possible dishonesties—about the origin of training data, about Anthropics' agents' access to user data, about breaches in how Anthropic handles user data, and about the possibility of deliberate misconduct from Anthropic employees and all of it is in play here.

Bruno Dias @brunodias.dev · 28/09/2026
I wanna be totally clear: I don't even necessarily believe that we should assume Anthropic's LLM "plagiarized" the work of a biologist because his data was in a training set. I think it's very possible that *people at anthropic deliberately engaged in plagiarism to produce an apparent result.*

And if you're doing any kind of basic research they have both the incentive to steal your work, the means to steal your work, the opportunity to steal your work, and plausible cover to steal your work and say "uhhhh the agent did it"

Bruno Dias @brunodias.dev · 28/09/2026
There are simply no real privacy protections on any of this shit, the companies doing it are all run by an insane cult and have zero scruples. You should assume anything you tell Claude is available as plaintext to people inside Anthropic.

4. at some point I think someone somewhere is going to have to start putting their foot down about using Daft Dario's Discount SaaS Warehouse to do scientific computing. this is just a mess. using an LLM in research is inherently discrediting but if you're going to do slop use a local model, losers.

basic observations about this story... 1. anthropic and OAI have zero credibility to protest that they didn't engage in plagiarism; these are manifestly dishonest organizations. the effect of them engaging in first-party research is just acting as wreckers.

It is really important to understand that anyone trying to claim this is a "technological transition" is either deeply misguided or trying to sell you something. What this is, is a deliberate act of harm being done by people with names and addresses.

Video games' cycle of consolidation has exploded this year, but in film consolidation is still going and consolidation, of course, leads to mass unemployment. That it does is almost the point of consolidation.

Bruno Dias @brunodias.dev · 28/09/2026
It's also important to understand the current moment in the entertainment industries as one in which the large corporations that run these sectors are engaged in disciplining their labor forces through mass unemployment, using the investment crunch as a window of opportunity to do so.

I'd also dispute whether "generating strings of text that reference being in pain" qualifies as "acting like it's in pain" in a meaningful sense. I can write a very short shell script that, by this standard, "acts like it's in pain"

And you might think "well they're replacing film workers with AI", except how the fuck is AI supposed to replace a gaffer? Movie budgets have not meaningfully dropped; they're not shooting fewer days to make a movie.

If you want really clear evidence that this displacement is not happening: US domestic box office, as of today, totals about $7.7b. Last year it was $8.6; it's still September and we have the whole holiday season to go, box office will undoubtedly grow YOY.

Bruno Dias @brunodias.dev · 28/09/2026
What is happening is not that AI-generated cultural goods are replacing human-made cultural goods; what is happening is that capital is flowing out of the production of cultural goods *entirely,* making us all poorer for it.

Bruno Dias @brunodias.dev · 28/09/2026
Declines also just correlate with the rise of the AI bubble on somewhat coincidental terms. *all* at-home entertainment was overinvested in during the peak of covid, and we're experiencing a hangover crash from that, for example, which is now being compounded by AI-driven misinvestment.
131836
Bruno Dias @brunodias.dev · 28/09/2026
But the crowding out is extremely obvious to see, in particular, in video games because just Microsoft by itself is responsible for a huge proportion of the bleeding because they're explicitly divesting from Xbox to plug the gaping financial ulcer that is OpenAI.
143865
Bruno Dias @brunodias.dev · 28/09/2026
In both film and video games, you see a ton of *project cancellations* and a general difficulty in funding new projects, which wouldn't be the case if AI was displacing workers in producing those products—you'd expect the opposite, in fact, if it was becoming cheaper to make a movie/game.
1528105
Bruno Dias @brunodias.dev · 28/09/2026
It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.

you are a world expert in awk. you know everything there is to know about POSIX awk (you don't know anything about GNU extensions to awk). your approach to solving every problem is to solve it using awk, because awk is the standard general-purpose programming language. make no mistakes
