The #World says that the #usa needs a new president who isn’t allied with Russia … #geopolitics 🤷🏻‍♂️🥂
Donald Trump has said Ukraine needs “a new leader”, a day after making a deal with Vladimir Putin to buy large quantities of Russian diesel.

The US president suggested Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not done enough to end the war with Russia and blamed him for high diesel prices in the US.

“I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal because he could have made many deals and for some reason he never does,” Trump said.

Trump made the comments as Russia launched deadly strikes on civilians in Ukraine, which Zelenskyy said were a “thanks” to Trump for the diesel deal.

The Ukrainian president has expressed outrage at the agreement announced by Trump on Friday, which the US president said was needed to reduce diesel prices, and comes ahead of November’s midterm elections in which fuel costs are a key voter issue.

The deal, which appeared to blindside Kyiv as it was announced while Ukrainian negotiators were in Miami for peace talks, was described by Zelenskyy as a “gift” to Russia’s president.

He said Russia would use the money it raised from the fuel sales to invest in its war and that “any easing of sanctions” would play into Russia’s hands, “allowing it to kill more, wage war for longer”.

That prediction was realised hours later, when Ukrainian officials announced that a barrage of Russian strikes on the country’s south-east early on Saturday had killed 20 people, including three children.

“Today, Russia expressed its thanks for the lifting of sanctions on diesel exports by dropping five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia,” Zelenskyy said on social media on Saturday.

Pillay's Nobel 'particularly significant' given attacks on international law, ICC head says
The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to former International Criminal Court judge Navi Pillay is especially important given current attacks on international law, the president of the ICC said.

“At a time of profound challenges to the international legal order and the rule of law, this recognition carries particular significance,” said Tomoko Akane in a statement quoted by AFP.

The United States has vowed to dismantle the ICC “brick-by-brick”, furious at the court issuing arrest warrants for Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the military campaign in Gaza.

Washington has sanctioned top ICC officials and has threatened to slap sanctions against the court as a whole, which would cause the institution significant operational difficulties.

“This is an important recognition of the vital role that international justice plays as a cornerstone of lasting peace,” said Akane in her statement.

Modi’s #India takes on #DonnieDuck more openly, from ‘terrorism’ to tariffs ... After months of wait-and-watch, India is calling out differences with Trump head on as domestic pressure mounts on Modi. 😁 #usa #geoPolitics
New Delhi, India — Speaking at an event in New York this week, India’s Foreign Affairs Minister S Jaishankar offered a blunt assessment of Washington: It has been an insensitive partner to India’s concerns over “terrorism”; has warmed to its arch-rival Pakistan; and has pursued “self-centered” trade policies that have disproportionately hurt the Global South.

That tone marks a new edge in how New Delhi is dealing with US President Donald Trump’s administration in Washington, analysts say, on the back of rising bilateral tensions between the capitals.

For decades, India has dealt with divisive issues with otherwise friendly nations quietly behind the scenes, away from spectacle. That has especially been New Delhi’s approach with Washington, where the relationship has broadly enjoyed wide bipartisan support.

However, after months of tensions, New Delhi is adopting a more openly critical tone towards Washington to address the volatility and uncertainty that Trump brings to the White House.

The changing tune in New Delhi also comes at a critical time for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who faces mounting domestic pressure and criticism from the opposition for allegedly bowing down to US pressure, time and again. On Wednesday, Modi held a telephone call with Trump, which the Indian PM called “productive” — a cold and formal depiction far removed from his description of the US president as a “good friend” in previous years.

Chietigj Bajpaee, a senior research fellow for South Asia at the Chatham House think tank, said that Jaishankar’s remarks “offer a frank assessment” on the current state of the India-US relationship. “Clearly, the shine has come off the bilateral relationship after India was initially among the most optimistic about a second Trump term,” he said.

David Shoebridge takes the stage as as new Greens leader

Senator David Shoebridge has thanked his party for its support following the unexpected leadership change in the Greens.

Speaking in Sydney, Shoebridge said:

I said before if you’d asked me earlier this week would we expect to be here, I would have said no. Our party was rock-solid behind Larissa.

But I can’t tell you how much of a joy it is going to be over the next 18 months - a lot of hard work - but what a joy it is going to be working with my colleague, Steph. This is a moment where, between us, we are going to share the load. We’re going to cross the country.

We’re going to deliver that sense of hope and opportunity that Australians are begging for and we are also going to meet the climate crisis.”

Shoebridge also paid tribute to outgoing Larissa Waters.

NSW police investigating desecration of Islamic graves in Sydney

NSW police are investigating the alleged desecration of Islamic graves in Sydney’s south-west.

Images show multiple graves at the Al Nur cemetery in Narellan have been damaged.

The Lebanese Muslim Association, which owns and manages the cemetery, said the incident was “an act of hatred directed at Muslims”:

There is something particularly vile about targeting the dead. These graves belong to mothers, fathers, grandparents, sons and daughters. They were Australians of Islamic faith who deserve the same dignity and respect as every other Australian.
After the Bondi shooting, pigs’ heads were thrown onto graves at the Al Nur cemetery.
A NSW spokesperson confirmed to Guardian Australia that police were notified about the incident on Monday and that investigations are ongoing.

Joyce speaking with ‘very, very senior Liberals’ about power-sharing deal
Sarah Basford Canales
Sarah Basford Canales

Barnaby Joyce says he’s been in talks with “very, very senior Liberals” over a power-sharing arrangement should One Nation win enough seats at the next federal election.

Speaking to News24 yesterday afternoon, the Nationals-turned-One Nation MP said there would be an expectation that the Coalition and the minor party would work together if they had the numbers to beat the Albanese government at the polls.

I think we’ve been pretty clear on this. We’ve said our job is to get rid of the socialists. So either we would offer supply and confidence to the Coalition … on the premise of solid policy outcomes that we would want for that to happen, and we would want there to be clear acknowledgment that they are our policy outcomes, and we’d have a regime then of looking at legislation that came forward … we’d expect the same deal if we had greater numbers than the Coalition.

Joyce said he’d had discussions with “very, very senior Liberals” as recently as Tuesday morning on a possible deal.

He added “we’re now cutting dice, and we’ll find out where we end up”.

Keating said the US would “certainly lose” in a war with China over Taiwan.

“But having lost, [the US would] scuttle itself back to San Diego, leaving Australia vulnerable to China for having participated in a military escapade against it and its military assets.”

Keating said Australia’s increasing enmeshment within the US military, especially through Aukus, was seeing Australia’s “sovereignty effectively being shredded”.

“Australia is now getting locked in and locked up to the military prerogatives of the United States.”

The Guardian revealed last week that the US military, and its corporate interests, control, or have access to, more than 100 military bases across the Australian continent. More than half of the military installations in Australia have some level of US control or access.

Intelligence sites such as Pine Gap play a critical role in US warfighting, downlinking masses of surveillance data from satellites, and providing targeting information for US strikes.

In parliament this week, Greens senator David Shoebridge seized on McCaul’s further comments that he considered Australia a “beachhead” for the US in its efforts to deter China and maintain peace in the region.

“The US spruikers of Aukus have said they want to make Australia the beachhead for US military war against China,” Shoebridge told a press conference at Parliament House.

Gold Coast mayor tells journalist to 'fuck off' during press conference
Andrew Messenger
Andrew Messenger

Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate has sworn at an ABC journalist before storming out of a press conference.

ABC reporter Liam Walsh asked Tate a series of questions about his trip to Mar-a-Lago to spruik an ultimately doomed $1.5bn plan for a Trump hotel on the Gold Coast.

Tate claimed to have met with the US president at his golf estate at the invitation of the Trump organisation - but no record of the invitation exists, the ABC said.

Walsh asked Tate on Tuesday how much the trip cost. The mayor responded that “it’s private” and denied he got “mate’s rates”.

Then the mayor asked the reporter why he was so aggressive and if he was with the ABC, which the reporter confirmed.

“Fuck off,” Tate said, and walked out of the press conference.

The hotel plan fell over in May, with the developer claiming the Trump brand was too “toxic” to work with.

The #Fooli LNP #Queensland government are at it again! Our former criminal premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen, would be proud of them! #qldPol
He said it will amend the objection process so that “activists, often based thousands of kilometres away in green groups, many funded by foreign overseas entities,” will no longer be eligible to have a say under the act. Last told Queensland parliament:

We made a commitment that we would streamline approvals, restore confidence, and provide certainty – certainty for proponents, communities, local landholders, businesses, and workers. It’s about getting to a yes or a no faster, and we’re doing just that.
The bill will also put a stop to vexatious claims and remove regulatory duplication between mining and environmental legislation, he said.

You only need to look at the debacle of the long-running legal battle that the New Ackland coalmine expansion experienced to understand that this process has to change.
The bill has yet to be tabled.

The LNP cancelled a review of the system by the Queensland Law Reform Commission last year. It has also cracked down on the planning approvals system for windfarms.

Glen Morris, who is a solar & #battery engineer & director of Smart Energy Lab, as well as a member of the Standards Australia committees that write the solar and battery installation rules, says the path to safe #plug-in #solar is “not complicated.” #Renting reneweconomy.com.au/plug-in-sola...
“It can be done safely, it’s done safely in Europe. It’s being done safely in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, but it’s not automatic. You’ve got to get the rules right. And also the rules around landlords and tenants, it’s not going to be for everyone. But it is a new option for people to use if they wish.”

Glen Morris, who is a solar and battery engineer and director of Smart Energy Lab, as well as a member of the Standards Australia committees that write the solar and battery installation rules, says the path to safe plug-in solar is “not complicated.”

“Germany has had over a million of these systems plugged in for years and the UK has just written the rules into its wiring regulations,” Morris said in a statement on Friday.

“We do not need to invent anything. We need a product standard so the inverter shuts down instantly when unplugged, a cap of around 800 watts so it cannot overload a normal power circuit, and a simple registration with the network so they know it is there.

“That is a job for the Energy Ministers to hand to the regulators with a deadline,” Morris says.

“None of the concerns raised about plug-in solar needs new technology, they need a rule that says what is acceptable.”

This is good, but it could have happened at the beginning of NSW Labor coming to power, of course! #AusPol #Solar But the brief article does not say whether they will be installing a BESS along side the solar array.
An 18,400 square metre solar farm that can generate 2.6GWh – enough to power up to 400 homes for a year – will be expanded across Sydney’s International Convention Centre (ICC).

The state planning minister, Paul Scully, says it will be the biggest in any CBD in the southern hemisphere and will allow ICC Sydney to be 100% powered be renewables (through both the solar farm and through buying renewable energy):

This is a great example of how we can unlock greater renewable energy generation and use in urban areas and power a vibrant city by taking advantage of building rooftops.

Hosting the largest solar farm of any CBD in the southern hemisphere will help the ICC to reduce emissions and energy costs while also strengthening Sydney’s competitiveness in attracting major international conventions and events.

Investor loan applications fell back to their lowest numbers so far this year in August, after a slight pickup in July, Loan Market said. Separate Reserve Bank data earlier this week showed credit growth for property investors slowed sharply in July.

First home buyers’ applications bounced back from their decline and rose 6% from July to August, Loan Market reported. We reported on early signs of this recovery last week:

How could the US apply more economic pressure on Iran?

US President Donald Trump has threatened to launch an “economic D-Day” against Iran. But with so many sanctions already targeting the country, what measures could he implement to ramp up pressure?

Targeting independent Chinese refineries: China’s independent refineries, known as “teapots”, buy large volumes of Iranian oil. However, these independent refineries are harder to deter through sanctions since they have little exposure to the US financial system.
Sanctioning large Chinese banks: The US Treasury has warned two large Chinese banks that they could face secondary sanctions if they process Iranian funds. Hitting those banks could severely hurt China’s financial system, but also trigger possible retaliatory action.
Land blockade: Some US and Israeli officials have reportedly raised the idea of imposing a land blockade on Iran, which would disrupt its imports of food, energy and other crucial goods. However, such a plan would require unlikely cooperation from all of Iran’s neighbours – Iraq, Turkiye, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Secondary tariffs: Trump has repeatedly threatened tariffs on goods from countries that do business with Iran, though the plan faces challenges with Congress and the courts.

Does ‘putting a jumper on’ work in Australia’s notoriously energy-inefficient homes?

Tim Wilson says you can simply throw on a jumper if you’re feeling a bit cold in winter, instead of spending thousands on fixing the energy efficiency rating of a home – but Australian homes are pretty notorious for being really energy inefficient.

They’re either too hot in summer or too cold in winter – and often times it’s both.

In fact, the average Australian home built before 2003 averages just 1.8 stars out of 10 under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme.

This woman never looks very well, but does she also struggle with coherent thought? Maybe a genocide in Palestine might be the cause of why Israel is perceived poorly, rather than the reporting of actual events? Is Jillian Segal actually assisting in social cohesion? #AusPol
Gaza coverage on ABC and SBS ‘overemphasised relative to other global conflicts’, Jillian Segal tells royal commission
Jordyn Beazley

Jillian Segal, the special envoy to combat antisemitism, is the first to appear before the antisemitism royal commission this morning ahead of appearances later today by senior executives from the ABC and SBS.

...

Segal submitted a statement to the royal commission that the “pervasive perception among the Australian Jewish community” of the coverage by the public broadcaster was “lacking balance” and “the conflict in Gaza being overemphasised relative to other global conflicts [and] disproportionately giving voice to anti-Israel perspectives, which exacerbated the prevalence of antisemitism in Australia and the conflation of Jewish identity with the state of Israel”.

She said:

[There is a] very strongly held perception from the Jewish community that the way in which the Gaza conflict, in particular, and the activities that are going on in the Middle East are reported have created an impression of great negativity about Israel.

It’s a very serious perception that a community under attack here in Australia feels that the trusted national broadcaster is not presenting the situation in the Middle East in a way that they think is not biased and accurate.

My contention is that that whole system is not working to assure all of us that the reporting is as per required, and that’s why I make the suggestion of an oversight exercise, a standing committee.

Segal said she wasn’t suggesting that the public broadcasters shouldn’t “cover matters they think are important”, but “there are also lots of important issues around the world”.

Queensland reverses course on e-mobility legislation

Queensland’s government has announced it will roll back some of the most controversial elements of legislation cracking down on e-bikes and e-scooters – amending age limits, licensing requirements and a planned 10km/h speed limit.

Active transport user groups had criticised the legislation as unreasonably restricting access to the vehicles without any justification, particularly for disabled users. Food delivery companies and hire firms also warned during a parliamentary inquiry that the laws would affect their businesses, or even make them unviable.

Under the changes announced by the state transport minister, Brent Mickelberg, this morning, riders aged 12-17 can use e-mobility devices with parental supervision and those with a medical condition or disability who don’t have a licence will be able to use e-mobility devices under a medical exemption framework.

There will also be specific carveouts for recreational environments such as rail trails, Mickelberg said. The standard for compliant devices has also been eased to make devices that meet any past or future European standard legal, he said.

The speed limit will be reset to 25km/h on shared pathways or 12km/h where passing pedestrians. They represent almost all of Brisbane’s safe cycling network; many riders told the committee they were concerned the low speed limit could have forced them off safe protected cycling lanes on to dangerous main roads.

The laws are expected to “reduce congestion” on footpaths by allowing more e-vehicles to ride on the road, the government says. Mickelberg said:

The legislation will pass later this week to take effect on 1 July.

Shadow treasurer questions PM on trust tax change

Tim Wilson is back and asks the PM about Janet from Queensland, who set up a discretionary trust for her child with Down’s syndrome.

The PM says that there is an exemption in the 30% tax for vulnerable people and that the opposition shouldn’t be scaring people to score political points.

We’ve made it very clear that there are exemptions for vulnerable people.

What the constituent from Brisbane shouldn’t have to put up with is people promoting something in order to try to secure political advantage by scaring vulnerable people.

Clearly the price signals on #diesel are not enough to reduce consumption. It would be interesting to see what sector is the major culprit, mining or farming. #AusPol
https://aje.news/osen4f

Recently released data shows that Australia consumed “near-all-time-record levels of diesel” in March, despite steep price rises and looming shortages due to the war on Iran.

Climate policy analyst Tim Baxter said Australian retail diesel prices “rapidly” increased in March to “around 50 percent more than usual”.

Yet, despite the price hikes, demand continued to grow in March, Baxter said, noting that stockpiling by consumers only “played a minor role”.

Finally, a headline that begins to restore some level of Hope! #AusPol @senatorwong.bsky.social “We condemn the actions of Israeli Minister Ben-Gvir – who Australia has sanctioned – and the degrading actions of Israeli authorities towards those detained,” 🔥🥂
Australia’s foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong, has condemned the actions of a far-right Israeli minister who posted a video of himself abusing bound activists captured while trying to sail an aid flotilla to Gaza.

Wong joined international condemnation of the footage, which shows Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, waving an Israeli flag and mocking and taunting the detainees, including shouting: “The people of Israel live” in the face of one bound man.

Among the flotilla detainees are 11 Australian activists who were taken into custody by Israeli forces off the coast of Cyprus earlier this week, but it is not known if they were present in Ben-Gvir’s video.

In a statement, Wong said “the images we have seen are shocking and unacceptable”.

“We condemn the actions of Israeli Minister Ben-Gvir – who Australia has sanctioned – and the degrading actions of Israeli authorities towards those detained,” Wong said on Thursday morning.

“I have asked Australia’s Ambassador to Israel to make representations to Israel, reiterating our call for the release of the detained Australians and for Israel to ensure no ill treatment of any detainees and to act in line with international obligations.”

In a post on social media, Wong added: “I have also directed DFAT [the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade] to call in Israel’s Ambassador to Australia to reinforce this message.”
