i know times are bad and scary rn but it’s important to keep perspective on how much better things have gotten even within my lifetime. for example they sell taco bell sauce in grocery stores now

People call this album problematic, but what makes it great—makes it art—is how it’s the sound of a man putting his every Bad Thought on the page, and only recognizing about half of them as being Bad. And then there’s that splashy drumming, that sludgy bass, that sound of barely holding together

I also think there is a hint of an implication that trying to describe or understand the difference is ivory tower nonsense time-wasting and/or r/thisisdeep posting which I think is wrong. It’s precisely the fact that the line has gotten harder to see that makes identifying it worthwhile.

any designer/animator who doesn’t want to get caught using AI is probably already using a workflow like this (claude > photoshop, after effects, etc.)

misunderstanding where something is on the cartesian plane and its orientation (like the teeth here) is a big one - also standard vibecode tells like color and font choice. most of that could probably be fixed with a few extra prompts, though!

unclear if that matters in terms of its broader effect, though!

think it’s worth noting that this is claude code writing p5.js (programming framework for animations among other things) rather than pure video generation à la veo or nano banana, which leads to an entirely different set of tells than a video generation model

the problem with interesting technology is that engineers would much rather entertain themselves with how interesting it is than prove why it's interesting for others

i had my students build bots on bsky last semester. sure it was partly me doing my part to indoctrinate them but it was mostly because atproto makes it *so much easier* than any way i'd ever taught before. i think there are a lot of other things this is true of that just haven't clicked for people

anyway im trying to be the change i want to see in the world (soon) but i generally think more remixes and weird experiments and less "existing app, but on the protocol" would help artists understand the possibilities here
100
brent @bront.rodeo · 15/09/2026
i see a lot of apps that are a different way to view posts/blogs/whatever but not a lot of artistic experimentation. atproto could be the base for a new golden age of data art (what if all data was open?) but we gotta get more computer art sickos and less app developers on here

sort of half-formed atproto thought but: i see people talk about how we need more artists working with atproto but i think what that means is poorly defined. at least in the case of software artists the promise of a "locked open" web is huge and really exciting but not a lot is being done with it

I'm having some fun in this thread but I do think you should get in trouble for unleashing insane hacker robots on the open Internet that you've explicitly instructed to attack critical public infrastructure, which, to be clear, it eventually succeeds at.

I think the best way to think about the Omarchy stuff is not a bunch of companies donating millions of dollars to a Linux dotfiles project. It’s a bunch of companies donating money to a political advocacy project with goals like getting minorities out of open source and eliminating the Roma.

if you’ve been through the tech layoff wringer its worth looking for software jobs at places that aren’t tech companies. hospitals, municipal and state governments, universities - all of these places need programmers and a lot of the jobs are even union!

How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been? danluu.com/zitron/

Feb 2024: "I believe we're reaching the upper limits about what generative AI can do and how accurate its outputs can be."
        Wrong4
March 2024: "Have We Reached Peak AI?"; another prediction that hallucinations mean that AI progress is limited to then-current levels
        Wrong
April 2024: "As I previously warned, artificial intelligence companies are running out of data ..."; another prediction that models can't improve because there's no more data
        Wrong
June 2024: OpenAI growth is stalling (with the implication it will continue to stall), which will lead to some kind of collapse of OpenAI
Wrong (it could be the case that OpenAI will collapse but, if so, it won't be due to any kind of growth stall from 2024)
July 2024: "Generative AI, as I said back in March, is peaking, if it hasn't already peaked. It cannot do much more than it is currently doing, other than doing more of it faster with some new inputs"
        Wrong
July 2024: "Generative AI models aren’t getting more energy-efficient, nor are they getting more “powerful” in a way that would increase their functionality, nor are they even capable of automating things on their own [July 2024]"
        Wrong5
August 2024: "generative AI is a dead-end technology that has peaked”
        Wrong
August 2024: re-iteration that the AI bubble has 3 quarters to prove itself (from March 2024) or there will be a collapse
        Wrong6
September 2024: "o1 shows that OpenAI is both desperate and out of ideas", with a re-iteration of the idea that models can't improve due to lack of data
        Wrong
Oct 2024: OpenAI's forecast of $3.7B revenue in 2024 and $11.6B in 2025 and $100B in 2029 are absurd, "a statement so egregious that I am surprised it's not some kind of financial crime to say it out loud"
Wrong (2025 goal exceeded, 2029 TBD but not an egregious financial crime level of implausible)
Oct 2024: "[OpenAI revenue] growth is already slowing…

I tracked down the floating Canadian island you may have seen — for 14 years it's been lodged on a sandbank until rising water levels refloated it. 14 years ago was also the last time water levels in Lake Williston were as high as they are now.
