It really is striking how many authoritarian states have ended up in this exact same place, where the leader seizes control of scientific inquiry. Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union, Aryan Physics in the Third Reich, Great Leap Forward (also related to Lysenko) in China.

The tech overlords say that all we have to do to prevent AI from killing us all is to solve "the alignment problem," making sure AI has human values. But the same capitalists telling us this are willfully killing the planet and funding genocide in the name of greed. Seems they're already aligned.

Even if it's through a PAC, it's degrading to the public trust to have a large city's Chamber of Commerce targeting specific city councilors. They should be building a reputation of neutrality that is welcoming to business owners of all political affiliations, rather than becoming partisan hacks.

America's largest shorebird species, Long-billed Curlew, standing behind the world's smallest shorebird, Least Sandpiper. Of course, field flattening is in effect in this image. In reality, Long billed Curlews are only 3,150% larger than Least Sandpipers.

After 3 days, @mothweek.bsky.social is up to 5,617 species! Here's one that i added to the project, a big Aholibah Underwing that came in to the sheet in Portland last night. Lifer!

#mothweek is here! Amazing to check the @inaturalist.bsky.social project and see how fast the species are wracking up. 2,727 in ~34 hours. A little slow at my moth sheet last night because of cooler temps and breezy conditions, but I do love the topiary grass-veneers. They look like little wizards.

There are a lot of great field guides out there, but i have never enjoyed one as much as the "Birds of Borneo" by Quentin and Karen Phillipps. The illustrations and descriptions are top notch, but it's the incredible ecological notes that make it read more like a riveting natural history.

Pretty much my entire job is funded by federal grants. My projects relate to the effects of climate change on birds, multiple long-term demographics studies that show which birds are declining and which are doing well, & now a newer project on under-studied endangered tropical island avifauna 🧪🪶👩‍🔬
A researcher holds open the wing of a White-throated Ground Dove while recording information on its age and molt status. This large dove is dark brown with bright red-orange tips to its feathers. This is a young female, and so lacks the white throat of the males. An array of scientific gear fills the background of the image.Close up of a Rota White-eye (nosa' luta in Chamorro), an endangered bird on the island of Rota. This bird is being held for a photograph to document the eye and bill color which may be related to determining the age of these birds, which in turn is important in understanding population structure and reproductive rates.

This is a flower fly, or hover fly. You can easily see two little barbell shaped nubbins protruding from its sides where the thorax meets the abdomen. Those are halteres, organs that evolved from hindwings. The fly uses them to sense orientation and direction while flying. Guango Lodge, Ecuador
A fly with dark maroon eyes, iridescent wings held out to the sides, a coppery colored thorax, and and abdomen with grey strips alternating with yellow and black patterned bands. It is standing on a leaf.
