Diane Taylor on Crowborough divided; showing it reflects the mobilisation of those at both poles of the asylum debate, in response to the use of Crowborough Training Camp by Home Office, housing 300 asylum seekers in a town of 22,000 people www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...

It was the most welcoming town in Britain. Why has Crowborough become so divided?
In 2022, they opened their arms to Ukrainian refugees. But this year, the arrival of more than 300 asylum seekers has split the community. Can the rift be healed?

Later this year - November? - Burnham will set out the range of options for the UK over the next decade, to seek a consensus. Our @britishfuture.bsky.social report shows a broad majority for a closer UK-EU relationship with more mixed views of how close to go & on at what pace.

Some Labour and trade union voices are saying that exempting care workers from the reforms would not go far enough. One solution could be exempting all migrants who are already in the UK from the tougher rules, but restricting their access to benefits for a period after they secure settlement.

Olivia agrees, saying Labour needs to be confidently on the pitch - not dismissing concerns but being proud of who we are and what we do well on integration.

British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
The discussion ends on integration. Emily says the right has been setting the terms of debate about what it means to be British. But we have a positive story to tell

British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
We need to look at what changes are needed to make the settlement reforms fair, says Olivia. It’s the potential impact on children that worries her most, she adds.
010
British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
We could see a carve-out on settlement for care workers after trade union pressure, says emily. But unions represent lots of others workers too - and thousands of people responded to the govt consultation, arguing the settlement reforms are unfair.
010
British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Sunder agrees, arguing the UK should have a ‘migration budget’ that sets out what level of migration would be sustainable, how it will get there and how it will manage the impacts + secure the gains.
000
British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Sunder asks why the govt has never set out what a sustainable level of net migration is, rather than always just saying that we need to get it down.
010
British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Migration numbers only become a big moment when ONS publishes the stats every six months, says Emily. The government publishing a plan and making the case for what migration we need - for the economy and to staff the NHS - would lead to a more informed debate.
510
British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
The govt does look likely to rethink settlement reforms, he adds, but it would be wrong only to apply changes to care workers. What about the chefs, vets and engineers earning less than £50k? Are they all going to be told to leave?
100
British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Changes to visa thresholds coming soon mean that most people told to wait 15 years for settlement won’t be able to, as they don’t earn enough, Sunder adds. So Labour effectively has a ‘Remigration by stealth’ proposal affecting a million people.
111
British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
The settlement changes started as a modest proposal in the white paper, but became quite a radical proposal, making some people wait 10, 15 or 20 years, says @sundersays.bsky.social

On small boats and the deal with France, you’ve got to have a legal route that’s more attractive and viable than paying a smuggler to bring you in a dinghy - with a strong chance you’ll be returned if you don’t choose it, he adds
132
British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Small boats that are still arriving, pictured on TV, are much more visible than a 40% fall in arrivals, so this isn’t cutting through with the public, says Sunder.

@emilyagraham.bsky.social says you can’t adopt past approach by saying “we’ll do the control and then you can have the compassion”. They’ve got to be simultaneous. She says the ‘one in one out’ asylum deal with France has the right principles but has to be at much bigger scale

Labour’s should move on from the ‘Omerta’ under Starmer, to one of ‘Glasnost’, says Marcus. He wants Labour’s next manifesto to drop all red lines but one: ‘no rejoin without another referendum’
100
British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Pollster Marcus Roberts says support for outright rejoining is ‘a mile wide and an inch deep’ - a divisive debate could end in a narrow and equally divisive result. Better to focus on much stronger majorities in support of closer alignment short of rejoining
210
British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Andrew Lewin says he’s pro rejoining but now isn’t the time. Immediate priority should be a date for the summit and securing the youth mobility deal this year, he says. Then start the longer conversation about customs union and single market.

110
British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Both sides need to stop re-fighting the 2016 referendum if they want to connect with the public today, Sunder adds. Younger voters aren’t ’in the bag’ for rejoin; and many 2016 leavers would move closer to the EU, short of formal reunion.

Labour mustn’t overlook aspiration among uk ethnic minorities, says @jowusunepaul.bsky.social - removing unfair barriers is quite different to an outdated and paternalistic approach to ‘helping’ minorities
130
British Future @britishfuture.bsky.social · 28/09/2026

Bridging divides and tackling loneliness and isolation absolutely isn’t a ‘nice to have’, says @pauldaviesmp.bsky.social. But it won’t happen by itself - as @sundersays.bsky.social adds, it takes intention, planning and political will to make it happen.
